i dont have the pic developed yet, but i found this mushroom..and ill try to describe it the best i can using a cheap id guide: theyre lignicolous, growing on some kind of mulch/chips, they were scattered.... the cap is flat, but almost depressed, the color is light tan...kinda like cardboard, and it has a smooth but leathery consistancy/texture. 1 think distinct abou the cap is that it has 1 perfect perfect ring or circle about a cm. from the edge. the gills were adnate, and the spore print was reddish brown. it doesnt appear to have a veil. and the stem was club shaped. they were only about 2 inches from the ground, the largest cap was about 2 inches in diameter. i dont know if this helps, but it kinda smells very faint of parmesian cheese... well i hope that was a good description... .can any1 help?

Hard to say with out the pic. But a good rule of thumb for newer mushroom hunters is to stay away from Little Brown MUshrooms with a oragne to rust to reddish brown to brown spore print.... Some galerinas pop up in the spring, as do some inocybes, and both drop spores in this color range... and neither should go into your mouth... some inocybes are very dangerous, and galerinas... well... some of the kill ya. Dead. The ring you described arond the margin is something you see in some galerinas - as the start to dry.... Run away... run away.......

That IS a Galerina. I'm in SoCAL too - NOT and shroom hunters paradise, I'm sorry to say - and after living in seattle for a decade, it's downright BRUTAL! Well done getting the picture up and taking the spore print. You can see that these shrooms look an AWFUL lot like certain varities of Stunzii - perhaps I'll post a pic - have to go through my stufff - Galerina - the presence of an annulous - a ring around the stem - or lack thereof, would HELP distinguish specific species... but it's immaterial. The whole genus is rotten. A cocktail of toxins... including Aminatin = Renal failure in 3 to 6 days, coma, and usually death. Baaaaadddddd,,,,,,

LA/Ventura County line... Santa Monica Mountains... You can drive about four or five hours north, find some pastures south of the bay area which MIGHT pop up a liberty cap or two... but not until November-ish. Or you can go another hour or so and actually go INTO the bay area, and find some genuine wood loving Cyanescens or Stuntzii. Again, not until November-ish

Silence is golden - lest an ignorant voice lead a man astray. That last post is Dangerous - If you're talking about Galerina Autumnalis, and I imagine you are... then you would rarely IF EVER find it in undisturbed habitat. That is part of what makes it an EVIL look-alike: It not only Looks Alike... it also grows side by side Stunzii in it's natural environment. (disturbed, garden and landscaped settings) in both grass and ligniculous debris / woodchips/ woody soils. And NO it CAN'T be a Stunzii - it dropped a reddish brownish spore print. Please be careful what you post, Psylocibeing.. no offense.... but this about safety. LIFE AND DEATH... and although "40 ounces" is obviously a clear-headed guy, what if he weren't? What if he were a dumb, impressionable punk kid who is fiending for a high... And what if your ill-concieved post directed him, inadvertantly, to consume these mushrooms... and what if they are Galerinas, which they most likely are.... Then he's looking at catastrophic liver and/or kidney failure and quite possibly death. Keep it cool, bro. m,so

i did a search and came up with this site: Below: "Psilocybe stuntzii, a 'magic' mushroom and Galerina autumnalis, a deadly poisonous mushroom growing in wood chips. Note that they are growing so close together that they are actually touching!" from what was described in this thread, it definately is Galerina Autumnalis. this whole mush hunting thing is fun! ima try it more often... thank you everybody!
