Possible Galerinas in PNW?
    #2117926 - 11/17/03 08:26 PM (13 years, 20 days ago)

Found these in a city park located in SW Washington. They were growing in the grass between a wooded area(10ft. away) and a playground that used bark chips(3ft. away). Most of them were hiding under leaves.

The cap is light brown/rusty color getting lighter colored(tan) towards the edge. There is definatly a nipple in the middle. I can see striations in the cap. When wet it was somewhat slimy but now is more tacky to the touch. Caps are probably a little bigger than the size of a quarter.

Gills are a light cinnamon brown color and attached.

Stem is white, hollow and has changed color since I've picked them. It seems more of a brown color than blue. Stem is about 2" tall.

Smell is raw and what a mushroom should smell like.

I think they are probably Galerinas because there is no distinct bluing. Anyone have a guess? I'm taking a spore print so I will post when I have results.

Don't know why these two are so fuzzy?

Id say Galerina...The gill color is not right for a Ps. cyanescens.

Those are Galerina marginata and the stems are ana orange to blackish in age or damage. In lawns and in woodchips. Not even good to handle.

MJ, you're scaring me.  What can happen from handling them?

Spore print came back rusty/orange colored.  Looks like I'm pretty good at finding the deadly ones.  :nut:

Nothing really... You need to injest the mushrooms to be poisoned by them.

As Gumby Dude says nothing. however i would hate to handle some and then wipe my eyes or pick my nose or get mouth liwuids on my hands.

It is just reasonalbly safew to assume that since they are poisonous they are better left alone and untouched.

Thyese shrooms contain the same amatoxins found in the deadly amanita shrooms. That is why I always telleveryone to avoid any mushrooms with gills which are nort chocolate-brown to purple brown or black. That whould mean white gills, orange rusty cinnanmon gills etc and the boletes which blue or the stropharias which blue.

It is easier to find the mageic shrooms by automatically eliminating the shrooms you should never touch. that is what I i teach people when i go picking with them.

They do strike a resemblance to actives though. I have only seen Galerinas in books. Definitely one to avoid. Thanks for the pics!

Yeah, thanks for the pics. The caps look just like cyans, but at least the stem and gills tell otherwise. I would be fooled on first glance.

Found a few of those today. Growing on the border of a woodchip mulch bed and a big lawn. Only difference is the stem was all light orange...didn't fade to blackish. Thought they were cyanescens at first, too.
