I am absolutely horrified of dying.
    #6167508 -

Nothing special/profound here; I am just stating my position on the matter. Anyone have anything (advice, poems, etc) to comfort me? How does everyone else feel about their own death?

are you afraid of the actual moment of death? or the end of physical life for whatever period from seconds to forever that you believe?

i am afraid of the sensation that will occur through my mind and body at the moment that life (as we see it) ceases to exist.

And yes, the idea of eternal void (non existence) scares the living piss out of me.

oh sweet, didnt even notice... but um.....

about death.... I guess it is something you have to personally come to terms with.

A few points to touch on here.... almost 100% of Rick Strassmans patients, even after their 1 year evaluation, said that if anything was gained from their DMT experience, was that they were no longer afraid of death....

which makes me think that it takes a very near death experience to understand partially what death is, and have some clue as to what it may feel like.

Also, my ideal way of dying is jumping out of an airplane, and my parachute doesnt open. i figure, it is one of the only ways to die where you have about 5 minutes of immenent death staring you in the face, and you have some time to really cope with it, and evaluate your life.

lol, that analogy kind of made me laugh. something humorous but deeply terrifying about it.

DMT huh? I have had a few ego deaths on shrooms before. pretty scary stuff. spent what seemed like eternities writhing on the floor thinking I was about to enter the black abyss forever.

Perhaps I am just thinking too much about it. But I don't know how to not think about it. I mean, there is nothing out there more unknown and unexplainable than non-existence.

I fear dying in the near future, like before I turn 30.... but I am perfectly ok with dying any time after that.

Actually, i want to live all the way up to the point where my penis stops working. After that, i will welcome death.

You also, are not ready to die. I am concerned about dying before I am ready, as suggested in my post. My great uncle Herman died some years ago at age 106. The last time I saw him he was 103 and got around quite well: he took a limo to the airport and flew to another state by himself, he lived alone with Victorian furniture - purchased new! (he was 18 when the Titanic sank. He met Leon Trotsky in NYC just before he started the Russian revolution. He was born in 1894). Herman once told me that "If I die tonight it's no big deal," (assuming he died in his sleep). I used to ask him philosophical questions, but he told me that I was better suited to answer such questions. Most octagenarians (80+) do not fear death. Therefore, longevity for those of us who still fear death is a value to be embraced. I watched my father at age 89 care less and less about things as he approached death. The nursing home kept him stoned for real pain (peripheral neuropathy), and I had to have them cut back on the meds, but he evidenced no fear. He also did not want to discuss symbolic stuff like the 'Great White Lodge' (he was a Freemason). In fact, he actually gave me an angry expression when I asked him about that. I don't know why. Perhaps because I didn't become a Mason, or he did not want to 'think' about death, or he thought I was patronizing him. I'll never know.

Stay healthy. Live long and prosper.   In the meantime, spiritual lifestyle is a lifelong discipline meant to put our transient physical life into perspective of Eternal Life. How we choose to intellectually grasp the nature of Consciousness is a joy for me, but I understand that intellectual understanding is just scaffolding for the 3-stage rocket (body, soul, spirit) that is me. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.

let me ask you something.
does your fear of dying make you act different than someone who isn't afraid of dying?

for example, perhaps because you are afraid of dying, it makes you closer with your family?

or does it make you a paranoia case, or what?

sometimes people say they aren't afraid of dying, and i can tell they are lying, they are just making it up.

i've had a few near death experiences, and it scares the shit out of me everytime.
even though i can see God in Heaven, I'm not ready to go there.
i sometimes think that there will come a time when i am ready, and maybe even willingly cross over without tragedy- i prefer to keep my eye on that moment, which i want to be a long ways away, like 50 more years, lol.

i don't know if this will heal your fears, but maybe

i've been dead, i've had time come to stop and enter eternity
i've seen death many times
in fact, it's happening all the time
you're already dead, and your "life is flashing before your eyes"
(o yea, i wrote a thread about this, lol, i'll bump it)

in death you can be in more than one place at a time
you can be in two times at the same time
you are every song that you ever loved
you are everything you've ever loved
and you rejoin that energy pool when you die
and it's fabulous

holding onto life is sorta silly in a way
but we provide duty of service and rewards come for living long
in life we love things apparently apart from them and seperated from them, and this is why when you die it will seem as if you were God all along, because of the way you are so connected to all this cool stuff.

"I am concerned about dying before I am ready"

Don't worry...you will be ready because you will be given no choice. Death is our constant companion through life. Fear of the unknown is natural, and our biological imperative is to live...to fight for every little bit of life that we have. The fear that you experience is just the healthy expression of this biological drive.

"Death is the only wise adviser that we have. Whenever you feel, as you always do, that everything is going wrong and you're about to be annihilated, turn to your death and ask if that is so. Your death will tell you that you're wrong; that nothing really matters outside its touch. Your death will tell you, 'I haven't touched you yet.'" -- Carlos Castaneda

No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

You said you were afraid of non-existence, but if you were non-existent, then there won't be a you to experience it, thus nothing to worry about.  I understand being scared to lose "me, I, myself", etc.  But it becomes a matter of surrendering.  We have to let go of all of the control dramas.  We can barely control things in our daily life (and trying to is what causes a lot of problems for us), so how do we think we can control death or what comes after it?  There's no way.  A comforting thought for me is that ZILLIONS of creatures including humans, animals, plants, insect life, they've all gone through the process of death before us.  So many have travelled the path, and so many do it without a single worry or care.  Why should I get so caught up about it?  A supreme being wouldn't make it into something we can't bear anyways, if we all have to do it, unless this being was just a big meany, and I doubt that is the case.  It'll all be fine

to alleviate your fear of death... perhaps the next time you hurt yourself or feel some kind of extreme pain... pay attention to it. Feel the experience, not the pain. The pain is only a tool to let your mind know something is amiss with your body.

Death is not really... Nil. Its a release. Perhaps you are afraid of dying because of how you live your life..

Are you afraid of what you will lose, or afraid of the pain? are you afraid of not knowing?

embrace change and embrace the unknown. It will set you free...

fighting death I'm sure is a harrowing experience...

but since it is imminent and a part of the human (and natural) process, acceptance and submission when the time comes will make it easier on you... enjoy something. You only get on chance at it when it actually happens, so why fight? make love to Uriel, the reaper, Death, the uncoiling serpent... they are gifting you with release, not taking something away from you.

attachment to this earth can also make you afraid of death in that sense. It is a beautiful place you sill spend all your time in, but its only a temporary home.

let go friend, thats the only advice i can really give.
