Will putting small adhesive labels on DVD's cause any problems?
    #6127054 -

I've got some 1" x 3" adhesive mailing labels and Ive already put them on a few of my DVD's and CD's so I stop losing my cd keys, but I've yet to try them. I want to make sure that with the high RPM's 16x dvd roms spin that I won't be causing undue stress on the player.

Anyone know if a label is enough to (even slightly) throw off the rotation of a dvd enough to damage the player over time?

If you're worried about its center of rotation, just balance your label with aonother label radially on the same side (i.e. to find the placement of the second label, do not mirror the other label but rotate it around the CD until it is in the opposite position.)

If you do this right with four labels, it should look sort of like a swastika.

this is paper, on a disk. the disk weighs enough. unless you like, stick a penny under the label or something.

Good point. I didnt think it would matter, but in my Dexedrine induced state I figured it'd be worth it to ask. If nothing else it gave me something to do for about 30 seconds.

Make sure the labels won't come off, that would be a lot worse.

Always put your important data on 2-3 disks, do not entrust stuff you care about (like your digital photos or a writeup) to one single disk. If you're looking for decades of storage, use no labels or ink to prevent chemical interactions.

I know that Blockbuster had to start using full cover stickers (looks like the whole CD) instead of small stickers on one side of the disc. People were complaining that the discs would "wobble" in the drive, and scratch the lens.

Just get the full size labels to be safe... The discs will be fine, it's the lens in your DVD burner you need to worry about.
