hi.....max
If you can't find Verm.
You might consider trying a Grain or Birdseed Tek.
With these you won't need Verm.
Good luck!

i woudl suggest the same thing... start out with bird seed or whole rye.. you wont regret it once you get the hang of it, you will just have saved time well wasted on verm... whole grain works best anyway and its not really THAT much harder than brf and verm if you do your research and are very sterile

i would just use plain whole brown rice, with some perlite or something to make the top protective layer. coming up with a top protective layer for using 1/2 pints is the hard part if you go that way. maybe just plain sterilized sand would work? never tried it, but really you just need some non-food substance to filter out and block contamination from getting in the jar. once you get that layer figured out, the substrate is easy, just use whole brown rice alone. this i have tried, and it works good.

please if your a newbie do not use Rice only it will likely end in failure, birdseed or rye is much easier.... i PROMISE and it doesnt need a top layer

I have the same problem as you so i use rye. i had some troubles when i started but then i got the hang of it. Now i want to try casing and not having verm is making everything more difficult. I'm gonna try to case my next jars with straight peat + lime.
Good luck.
