Vermiculite replacement?

As we we all would like to get maximum yields, that is only possible with maximum nutrients. It seems the purpose for the vermiculite in a BRF mix is to allow some air space to prevent clumping and to act as a moisture resevoir.
As this takes up almost half of your substrate, the yields will be much lower than if one used 100% nutritious substrate. I know people do this with rye berries, but not birdseed and BRF. Can anyone come up with a nutritive filler to serve the same purpose? Anyone try the coco-coir as part of the subtstrate? Also has anyone found coco-coir at any major chain stores garden department?

Swami,
Some guy was going to use coco-coir instead of the vermiculite in a BRF mix.
He lived in some weird foreign land that he couldn't find vermiculite in.
I haven't seen his update as of yet....though.
I have some coco-coir that i could experiment with.
So i will make up a few jars and post my results in the next week or so.
I have been making some jars the past few days anyway.
As far as where to get coco-coir....you can get it in most Pet Stores.
In the reptile part of the store.
Its called Forrest Bed.....made by T-Rex.
You can also find coco-coir in hydroponic shops.
Some nuseries also carry coco-coir.
