Vermiculite replacement
    #1411610 - 03/26/03 12:45 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

With the unfounded fears of asbestos contamination, it has become nearly impossible to find vermiculite in my area. I have travel to almost every garden store, *mart, home depot, etc around and they have all stopped selling it. Its not like they never had it, I have purchased from many of these places in the past, now they no longer carry it.

I will continue to search for the real deal, but in the mean time I may need a substitue. I found a Scotts product "Multipurpose Soil" something-or-another that claimed to be "better than vermiculite". It looks kinda like perlite. Expensive shit, I think they are taking advantage of customers' fears.

Is there anything that anyone could suggest, as I need to mix up some compost and require vermiculite. Thanks a lot!

Shipping would kill me (i think) it would at least double the price unless i bought more than I need. I am just looking for a short term replacement; I know that if I keep looking, I can find it locally, thanks though!

*EDIT*
Really, thanks for the idea! For some reason the idea of checking my local hydro shop skipped my mind. Good thing they have a website, clicked right over and found what I was looking for!

compost is too compact, manufacturer recommendation is to add 30% verm.

my mom and pop supplier place has also stopped selling it... i've investigated using perlite instead, seems to be okay so far.
