Fields of Study with Psychedelics

What are the major trains of thought on psychedics? For example the 'new age' beliefs vs the MAPS study of MDMA. Im sure there are others and I am curious as to what different groups of slightly wiser people are studing and what ideas they are pursuing. Im talking about on a general level. I want to know what people who believe drugs are not a completely bad thing but want to find uses for them in socitey and such...
Im trying to find a good theory of how drugs can be used in a benifital way.. of course I could be just trying to justify myself.

Read "DMT: The Spirit Molecule" by Rick Strassman. He talks about a human psychedelic study he did a few years ago where he gave high doses of DMT to volunteers in a hospital setting. While the papers he published in the journals were fairly dry dose-response type stuff, in the book he speculates a bit about what DMT's role in the brain is and how it might mediate near-death and mystical experiences. A good read.
