This is a good thread. Sometimes, even if a belief is hypothetically true, a person can end up so dogmatically attached and dependant on it. In my case, psychedelics "showed" me the possibilities in life, and the potential for human beings to eventually live in unity. It became a source of comfort for me to live in that belief, and ironically, when I did mushrooms in an attempt to live that out, the blind-belief died.

I was left with the idea that nothing will happen in my life if I refuse to live it. It was extremely depressing and scary, but at the sametime, I found natural rewards in accomplishing the things I needed to do.

I think psychedelics have the ability to show you how your mind works, and remove any defense mechanisms that we all use to hide from the things we fear. When you face those things, and overcome them, your left with a stronger sense of self, and less of a need for beliefs. Now I use psychedelics to remove the psychological baggage that comes from living in such a crazy world. I like the analogy Bill Hicks uses, that TV is like spray paint to your third eye, and mushrooms are the squeegee.  :3rd_eye:

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

I am an ex-devout atheist actually.

I realized Atheism is a self-defeating stance. If you're claiming you KNOW that there is NO God (Atheism), then you must know everything there is to know...and then you are God.

I was a hardcore Atheist. I denied and denounced God at every chance. If I couldn't see it, it wasn't there, period. I laughed at the idea of "Spirituality." I set out 3 years ago to prove that God didn't exist. God didn't create Man, Man created the fallacy of "God." And now, I can't deny his/it's existance. I used to think Randomness existed, and now I see there's no such thing as coincidence. I used to think everything was so explainable and understandable, now I see how we can't even explain something as simple as what makes us "Human." I used to think we had no control over the world around us, and now I see the Energy that flows through each of us, giving us the ability to change anything we desire, if we choose to. Where I saw randomness and chaos, I now see design and beauty and structure. I see the endless cycle of life, and the patterns we never detect because they are too large to see since we're in them. I see the world as reductionistic as well as the entire whole, and on both scales, the patterning never stops.

What changed me? Study of the world, and mostly human nature. Shrooms definately aided in opening my eyes to a greater world, and love, and exposed me to that "connection to The Oneness", but they were supplemental to my ever changing and growing Spirituality.

I feel so foolish that I let those years slip by without opening my eyes to God, and to the universal energy and love that flows through everything. So many people ask "Where is God?" They try and picture God as a person, or even a being or force. This is all due to our Ego's, and our fallacy of 'self.' God is everywhere, in everything. The keyboard I write on is God, the Monitor I observe, the music I am hearing, and the air I am breathing to make it all possible. I am God, you are God. It's all the same, all comes from the same source.

I used to deny the Soul, now I embrace it. I used to discount the Supernatural phenoma, now I take solace in it. I used to be so blind to everything going on right under my nose, now I take it all in with wide-eyes. I realize that Information and Communication are THE reasons to live. Human to human interaction is all we live for, and all we need to attain "unity." Wide-spread Communication will break down barriers over time, and finally bring TRUE understanding of life, music and love. And I'm much, much happier this way.

That's one of the biggest realizations from psychedelics, I think. People see themselves in the traditional surface catagories that seperate us, like nationality, religion, age, race, gender, etc... But those often dissolve under psychedelic use.

The trick though, seems to be avoiding the dogma that is assocaited with beliefs. I think dogma is the result of the need for security, so being secure in who you are and the people around you is an effective way of overcoming it. Afterall, what does a person who is secure need with having to prove everything to themselves? Besides, even if it is a "wrong" belief, there's nothing wrong with seeing it from that perspective as long as it creates positive actions. I feel okay with being "wrong", as long as I'm not forcing it on anyone.

The largest problem is people try to validate the existance of "god" through convetional language, when the experience of God transcends all physical and spoken ways of communication. It MUST be felt to be understood, and after its understood, it's near impossible to convey to someone who hasn't felt it as well.

I think Shrooms connect you (partially if anything, but I feel its more than partial) to that essence, which is why they are so hard to describe to someone else.

That's very true.

on pyschedelics i learned to percieve barriers visually, and by extension i began to see underlying patterns in things.  everything other than that i can't comment on, because i noticed my own tendency is to try and explain things i can't understand by using open ended narrative.  i guess it helped me get over than tendancy
