Ram Dass on Sacramental Psychedelics
    #2179446 - 12/15/03 02:11 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

With a nod to the inimitable Learyfan, I'd like to offer an audio recording of Ram Dass speaking in 1989 on the sacramental use of psychedelics. He's contrasting the sacramental use of chemicals with an escapist kind of experience.

Ram Dass (1.5mb mp3)  :sun:

Hey thanks!!

I've been looking for Ram Dass mp3's for the longest time, but I can't find any. Actually, I think I saw a ton of them the first time I entered "ram dass" in Soul Seek and thought "cool, I guess Soul Seek has these regularly". Never saw them again after that. Last time I saw one was on Napster.

I'll download this when I get home. Glad I checked S & P today.

Learyfan: I've got another one here where he talks about the Good Friday Experiment, and an interesting take on the "bad trip" phenomena and its relationship to prohibition. Also some stuff about fostering the sacramental experience. Will try again to upload it a little later (modem chokes on uploads over 3 megs).

You all know he was a tenured Professor of Psychology at Harvard when his journey began around 1960. Richard Alpert was his given name (a little less confusing  ).

Here's the other file:

Good Friday, usw. (4.6mb mp3)

Keywords: Good Friday, psyilocybin, seminarians, theologians, bible, genuine religious revelatory experience, historically but not now, danger will robinson, turn on, tune in, drop out, the game, communes and the 60's, passed along with a great deal of love, outlawed chemicals, higher prices, paranoia effects experience, set and setting, bad trips, fear, panic, tranquilized, beneficial use, astral plains, fasting and study, guide, surrender, psychological death, lest ye die...

Good stuff, imo.

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.

Thank you 3rd person. Those files are incredible. I think everyone should hear them.

"Once they don't have the power of death......you see? That's the final power. 'If you don't do good, i'll take your life away', and you say 'go ahead baby, that's your karma problem, not mine'"

Where did you get those? If you have more, then we won't stop you from posting them.

Thanks Learyfan.  betcha thought I?d fogotten about you.

I agree that folks should hear this guy. He addresses many of the questions that come up in this forum. Of particular note to me are his thoughts on the zeitgeist. Things have come such a long way in the last 40 or so years.

From a talk he gave in 1989 called "Spirituality and Psychedelics".

Here?s a link to a timeline that will provide some context to those who might be interested. Consciousness Timeline

RamDass part 1 (6.2mb mp3)

not violent overthrow, useful, deeper truth, Harvard, hypocrite, 1961->1989, mainstream psychedelic, zeitgeist has changed, science as main church in america, science, physics, other plains, occultists, gurus, mental hospitals, morphine=LSD, punish change, powerful sudopods of growth, economic polarization, opportunistic economic structure, escapism, crack, dissatisfaction with myths of the culture, pleasure vs happiness, taxable, fear of undermining verticality of power structures, Pentagon, teenagers (not you), power rooted in fear, psychedelics as root of vietnam antiwar movement, breakdown of verticality of power, drugs are not evil, pron, addiction... beginning of as sacrament section.

>>>> Parts 2 & 3 are linked in the earlier posts in this thread. <<<<<

Ram Dass part 4 (5.3mb mp3)

science, introspection rejected, objectified human, clinical pathology, carl jung, relative reality, newtonian physics, einstein, things have changed, limits of technology and science, rock and roll, phenomenological overload, something happened, psychedelic mind mainstreamed, economic/political aspects, crack and cocaine, cultural myths, cultural conditions, context

Ram Dass part 5 (6.6mb mp3)

psychological dangers, opiates, addiction, bad trip, MDMA and seratonin, government labs, spiritual sequence, young people and drugs, becoming somebody, nobody training, time binding, marijuana use, psychosis and psychedelics, going to college and psychotic breaks, natural mystics, women and menses, intuitive validity of psychedelic experience, seeing freshly, less relevant and interesting over the years, body effects, payment, smarter and funnier stoned or tripping, funny fish story, Judith Stanton

Ram Dass part 6 (7.3mb mp3)

dangers of being overwhelmed by bad psychological stuff on powerful psychedelics (bad trips), LSD preparations, guides, trust your heart, do not be pressured into taking the medicine, not necessary for transformation, methods, practices and traps, pot smoking, paranoia and politics, every method is a trap, freedom is the goal, Judith?s insight, spinback cycles, wiser with dope, the role of guru, cost to having a method that is illegal, no long term damage from marijuana use, motivational shifts, depression, paranoia in the culture,  drug casualty to menche, more interested in what gets me down that what gets me high, sit with the boring into the beauty, more is better -> enough is enough, what is it feeding into your journey to becoming a free human being

:sun:     :eyemouth:

Yup, Freak lent me his book "journey of awakening", and
he's also alluded to in all the Mark Epstien books I've
been reading ("Thoughts without a thinker", "Going to pieces
without falling apart", "Going on Being"). Epstien really
holds him in high regard, so I started reading up on
him too. Don't know much about him as a person tho.
Tried to dig up dirt on google but havn't really delved
into it yet. He seems like an honest guy tho, but he has
made some major money with his guru status/books etc.
That's the sceptic in me talking...
