Ok so I got this pressure cooker and it has no cooking rack. What can I use as a Cooking rack?

looks like my old pressure cooker.

I used a vegetable steamer.....they fit in good.....and keep the jars off the bottom.

Or you could use a hand towel....and put the jars on top of the towel.

I'd put money on the pie tin caveing in under the weigh of the jars. use 1/4 inch chicken wire. I use it as a spacer in ALL my setups. I even use the stuff in my terrarium.

Walmart in the kitchenware.

Ok, I was going to post a thread about this, but since there already is one...

This may be a bit of a dipshit question, but I need some help. I just got my spores in the mail today (finally... spent 2 months waiting) and I have a pressure cooker and plan on doing a rye berry innoc. The thing is, I just grabbed the pressure cooker from my house (I'm up at school now) and I have no idea how to work the thing. Do all pressure cookers function pretty much the same way? It's just this big metal pot with a lid that fits on and twists to lock. I imagine this is pretty standard, I've just never used one of these things. Any help would be much appreciated.

Put at least two glasses of water in it (and the jars), close it, put it on fire. When you hear a constant PSSSSS (you'll understand what I mean), lower the fire, and start to count the time.
Good luck !

thanks for the advice tomldp!
I figured it was something that simple, but its not my cooker, so I didnt want to just fumble around with it and possibly break it. Just to clarify, though, do I not want to have any heat on it after it starts to make noise or just not very much, like a "low" setting on the stove or something? Thanks again.

If your pressure cooker has a removable weight on top, leave it off at first. (if not, don't worry about it). Put a small amount of water in it, as stated above, and turn the heat on high. If you have the weight off, wait until you see a steady stream of steam shooting out the top (this pushes out any trapped pockets of cold air, according to Mirro), then put the weight on. As soon as the weight starts to jiggle, and steam starts escaping from the top, turn the heat down to a medium temp. You'll have to play with the heat. Ideally, you want the top to jiggle (or steam to escape) two or three times per minute. I just got this off a web site: "Weighted gauges on Mirro canners should jiggle about 2 or 3 times per minute. On Presto canners, they should rock slowly throughout the process." Cook to the desired time and turn off heat. PC's are dangerous if they have a weight which is removable. If this weight is removed while it's still hot, steam will blast out the top (I've been burned on the face from this). You can either allow it to cool COMPLETELY by leaving it alone, or do the "quick method" if you have a sink nearby. Make sure the sink has enough room for the PC, and is not a plastic sink. Carefully carry the PC to the sink and place it inside. Run the COLD water full blast on the top of the PC. As the air inside the PC cools, it will contract, and you will suddenly hear it sucking air back inside itself. After the noise stops, it's safe to open the lid. While this works for cooking dinner, I don't recommend it for sterilization, simply because you run the risk of sucking contams inside the PC and into your jars. If the jars are sealed good, or you're in a sterile room, maybe you'd get away with it.
