ok, please read the whole post before flaming me
Understanding Certain Concepts: When water is at a boiling temperature, itll turn into a gaseous state. When it does so, it expands. The water droplet, and its gaseous counterpart will contain the same amount of H2O, thus making the gaseous bubble less dense than the water droplet it formed from. As the water droplets expand, they increase the pressure in the pot they're in, until the pressure escapes through the lid.
this is how a pressure cooker works. The lid is sealed to the pot, so the pressure can't escape. The water cant vaporize as well, because it needs to expand to do so. Thus, the water temperature will be able to supercede 212F.
I was wondering, one may be able to construct a pressure cooker. Using a standard metal pot, lid, water, and weight. Simply put water in pot, put lid on top, then a weight of a certain....well....weight. As the water hits 212F, the weight will make the lid not release the pressure.
A few points to consider - if the pressure gets too high, the jars may bust. If the lids on the jars are loose, i dont foresee this being a problem. -Experimenting will be of the highest value. This can determine the best size weight which will give way(along with the lid) to allow some pressure to escape. This will make a pressure regulator -Another possible pressure restrictor, is to simply use a large size hose clamp, or any other appropriately sized adjustable harness. This will, however not be able to regulate pressure. Experimentation will be of further value here.
The experiment. Ihavent experimented, nor will be able to any time soon. Perhaps someone with free time could. Whether or not you have a pressure cooker, or need any sterilized grain, really doesnt matter.
this would help those of us without the money for a pressure cooker, or still live w/ parents, and dont want to arise suspicion by randomly purchasing one.
thoughts, suggestions, critiques welcome

I think trying to make a PC with anything like a hose clamp as suggested is akin to making a hand grenade in your kitchen. I certainly would not try it without some sort of pressure relief valve involved. just my .02. Be safe and good luck.

Visit Wallymart, and also scour yard sales and thrift stores. I've found more PC's for cheap than I can shake a stick at.

Yes....you may get hurt testing it but yes, here are your major obsticals:
1 determine the weight thats needed to keep the lid on the pot. 2. Making sure you have some sort of overpressure plug. 3. determining what pressure you have achieved at any given time 4. Blowing yourself up in the proscess of testing. 5. being laughed at (or about, posthumusly), because you blew yourself up 6. everyone calling you a fool for trying to make such a device.
the amount of metal you would need isnt supplied in normal cookware, most would split around the bottom or down the side once you get aroung 7 or 8 psi. Calphalon and other hard anodized cookware might have an advantage but after paying $140 for good cookware....you could have bought a Pressure Canner.
Sorry man...usualy trying to improvise dangerous equipment is extremely costly.

when most people talk of pcs exploding they didnt, the safety valve blew off. making your own is very dangerous. huge amounts of energy are stored up and released in a split second. thick steel can be torn apart like paper. ever see a can of beans thrown on a fire exploding? BTW you have to get the air out the pc too
