How do you meditate ?
I went on a course with my mother (shes a druid) where one of her friends showed us a method of meditating called a light meditation, where you visualize a light starting at your feet and rising throughout your body. It gives a very weird sensation and relaxes you like nothing else... but this is the only way I know how to meditate.
What other methods are there? How do you meditate ?

Basic but maybe best. Sit and watch the breath.

Exactly, just be mindful and aware of what's going on. Don't try to do anything or be anything. Just sit and be you. If thoughts arise, let them, but don't dwell on them or give them food. Let them fall away naturally, as soon as they arise. If you find yourself dwelling on any thoughts or images or ideas, just gently bring your awareness back to your breath.

just breathe.
it's good to place the focus on something non-changing, because thought patterns are phantoms that rise and fall, but the breath is always there no matter WHAT you do, and most interestingly it is both a conscious and non-conscoius process.

breath in/breath out, and relax, visualize; about something reoccurring like waves crashing on the beach, let thoughts flow through your mind, its a release of metal stress, or inner noise, inner dialogue, that can obstruct the singularity focus,
purity in thought, must be underlining goal, for our thoughts and ours decisions are so fleeting,

A most simple meditation which is from Heart Of Buddhist Meditation - obtain a relaxed body position (I do this lying down as easily as sitting or in half lotus) - let a few breaths go by normally then while focusing your mental energy on the tip of your nose (a disk about the size of a dime is fine – consider a slight pressure) - follow the in breath “beginning …. middle… end…..”, then follow the out breath, “beginning …. middle… end…..”, keeping the attention on the tip of the nose, repeat this for ~20 minutes. - if you have a very deep breath, you can add “this is a deep breath..” - if you wander you can add “resuming…”
This can be done anytime or any place. It can build to a great psychic resonance or merely put a pause into a chain of repetitive thinking. It is extremely simple and is supposed to stay that way like working in a garden; take breaks or you may bake in the sun or be drenched by the rain.

One method of several, would be; Sit still, imagine your head as a 'fragile' crystal bowl filled with water, that if you move, will spill over... There is an ever "On stream" of water, within the bowl, manifesting out of "nothing"... So that if you were to spill, it would be filled instantly, as you settle again.
Hah.. Muse 'on being', ..all that you are!

Ironic thread title for someone with an 'Ohm' avatar!
Shut off your internal dialogue. Don't force any thoughts out of your mind however, simply let them pass through your head. Feel the intensity of a silent mind.
I started meditating with guided meditation, now I meditate with music and binaural beat mixes I make myself. I suggest for the prior, you do the same, it's hard to start out just doing it with no guidance.
Personally I try to do it daily, and have been doing for the past 7 months. It's one of the best ways to overcome indulgence.

"trying" = "make an effort"
You do not want to "make an effort" when you meditate... ..do you?!
Thus,.. Stop trying..
Do and do not..
..be!
Allow.. On the note of the healer Erick Pearl: Receive, DO NOT GIVE! .. Absorb.. and ALLOW any reflection.. Not by allowing it, but by "letting" it happen..

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali expounds on Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi - any of which might be refered to as "meditation", though that word is sometimes applied specifically to Dhyana.
Pranayama is practiced through the extension and control of the breath. The most basic practice of pranayama involves sitting quietly with the attention fixed on the breath, with attention to the duration and completenes of inhalation and exhalation, eventually introducing a pause between inhalation and exhalation and finally between exhalation and inhalation. A common mantra to use during breathing is "So hum" - "So" on the inhale, "Hum" on the exhale. There are many other pranayama practices, but that is the most basic.
Pratyahara is the introversion of the senses - during the practice of pratyahara, information from the senses does not impinge on the awareness. It can be practiced (attempted, in my case) by concentrating on the space between the eyebrows, and then moving that place well back in the skull, where the attention is fixed.
Dharana is the fixation of the attention to any single object, until the conciousness flows continually to that object without interuption. During the practice of dharana, any impinging thought is allowed to pass, and not followed. I'm told that it can only be mastered by long and consistent practice - I have not managed this for more than brief stretches of time.
Once dharana is well mastered, dhyana can be practiced. In dhyana, the sense of self is lost in the object of meditation. I really can't say much about what I haven't experienced.
"Light meditation" sounds similar to autogenic relaxation, where feelings of heaviness and warmth are introduced into the vaious parts of the body through suggestion. This is an important practice, but isn't the same as any of the above.
