Looking for help with a charity.

The supermarket I work at throws away SO MUCH shit it's disgusting. I mean this food has just hit its expiration date and it's still probably delicious. For instance, I was at the compactor today throwing away bakery's trash, and all of the bread was still unopened, still soft...The pies and cakes definitely still looked edible, and half of the salad mixes I threw away were brand new. We throw away SO much more than that on a daily basis and I really got to thinking.
I know the company chucks it so they can claim credit for it all and that's pretty much the only reason they're so quick to throw it out. They're saving money on new product, sure, but they're being entirely too wasteful. I'd like to get in contact with some organization that could maybe take this food to a more productive place than the dumpster. I know a lot of people need this food and it's senselessly being wasted by the masses. If anyone knows of anyone that maybe sends trucks out to pick this up I'm sure I could talk the bossman into donating the decent product. I have no experience with donations or charities, but you gotta start somewhere...right?

Thats crazy that they dont use that stuff where are you. Are you out in the sticks somewhere?
I volunteer for the Hunger Task Force here, and we have a truck that goes around to all the grocery stores in the early mornings. We have an agreement with the store that they put aside all the stuff they would normally throw out. Bakery, veggies, expried goods, etc. We pick it all up and take it back to the main building, where its either processed for immediate use (Soup Kitchen), or if possible is stored for later use.
You should definately get in touch with the local hunger organizations in your city and see if you cant get something like this going. I thought they did it everywhere...

I'm in the burbs of Philly, the area's really starting to pick up so I guess I might have some luck finding a place. It wouldn't be hard at all if agreed. I mean the place is practically a warehouse, so trucks could easily dock right into the area where we chuck all of the food. I'll have to do some research I guess.

all the grocery stores around here suck, they have huge fenced in compactors.
back where i used to live we'd find GREAT stuff.
like several garbage bags of candy after halloween. and a couple trashbags of various goldfish crackers and cookies.

I'm talking doughnuts, pastries, cookies, cake, pie, bread, muffins, cereal, TONS of fruit that's just barely bruised, all still cold from refrigeration. If I wasn't on a diet I'd be having a field day! Even the days I do the salad bar I find too much stuff that can still be eaten. It's in constant refrigeration but only goes out for 2 days, then it's tossed. It still smells, looks, and tastes new for up to 5 days even. Chicken salad, tuna salad, bangin' pasta salads, cut fruit, Caesar salad.
I'd have no problem puttin an extra hour or so in each day just to set aside the good stuff for shipping out. I'll keep everyone posted on progress.

its called liability.
if on the off chance, someone consumes food that sold past the FDA terms of expired and becomes ill as a result, well, then they are in for some costly fines and bad PR.
not that i totally agree with the above mentioned policies that some of you posted about, but i can see where they are coming from.

There would only be you and your memories... the choices you've made, and the people you've touched. If this world were to end there would only be you and him and no-one else. " .............. "MAN! You know there aint no such thing as left over crack!"

Yeah that's what gets me too. You'd think a perk to working at a store like that would be taking home discounted food or even just lifting the expired stuff. Nope. You'll get fired lol. I dunno, I wouldn't feel bad about taking expired stuff. It's going in the trash. I'm eating it and ultimately putting it into the toilet. Same thing right?

Expiration dates are a way of covering the manufacturers' asses. It's set weeks, sometimes months in advance as insurance on their part that the consumer can't sue for unsafe product.

I dont know the specifics, but activities like this are covered under the Good Samaritan Act, so you cant get sued for food poisoning.
