Poll: Do you Dumpster Dive?
    #3764698 - 02/10/05 11:39 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Dumpster diving can be defined as going into a dumpster for goods such as clothes, food, furniture, re-sellable items... If you're quick you'll catch some suggestions as to where to get some good stuff!
Do you dumpster dive?
You may choose only one
What do you Dive for?
You may choose many

Insane?  Maybe.  I was saying that it's an inane topic, meaning lacking sense or substance.

I'm not trying to knock your thread- I was just commenting on how detailed it is just to ask whether or not people rummage around in others dumpsters.

When my friends and I were traveling in the bus this past summer we would stop by papa johns and little Caesar's a bunch! We scored about 7 pizzas one time and mow-ed them in the parking lot in...Hopkinsville, Kentucky i believe it was...

Man Hopkinsville was good to us! ha!

I myself have furnished an apartment and a house, I regularly get produce from a Sunharvest dumpster (they toss loose leaves from leafy veggies, slightly bruised fruits, and sometimes you can even find sealed pastries!), and yep I've gotten some good clothes from some dumpsters too! Oh yeah, and we would find a bunch of tossed kids toys and would pull them out and bring them to the Ronald McDonald house drop off...what else...Oh done the re-sell thing too...no money though...unless you count the free penny that some companies send away in their advertisement letters (you can find some really cool stuff like free samples in post office dumpsters and the coolest thing is there is rarely any trash in there, just tossed junk mail and letters!)

inane? have you ever dumpster dove? i do regularly, and have saved probably thousands of dollars. translation- i have experienced 100s of hours of 'extra' life than many people who chose instead to workworkwork at a job they hate. i have more time for my life goals because i have tried dumpster diving. how could that be ever called inane?

dumpster diving is a very good survival strategy to add to anyone's bank of proclivities. to the squeamish i suggest that you think about it, and then at least go look around, even just as a fun curiousity. make it an adventure. who knows what you'll find; maybe you will even be suprised at the "spoils"...haha.

I've gotten rocking chairs and tables...steroes and records...nice apartments are the best. I once had some neighbors that moved out and just tossed like half their shit in the dumpster and sat it beside the dumpster and several of us in the apartments grabbed stuff and took it back to our apartments.

Hominid is totally on track! Just give it a try at least. Just go peak...you dont have to grab but just check it out! Would you grab a $20 bill if it was sitting on top of a pile of trash in a dumpster? How about under a small pile of trash? Free Money! (so to speak...i know there is no such thing as a free anything but considering all you need to do is get a tiny tiny bit dirty to get it...)

Hell, I've found a working microwave, telephone, plenty of couches and futon beds, tables, decorations, shirts, backpack, a silly porn dvd...

Think about it!! Be creative and a little daring! They arent really that dirty anyway!

free laws-

you are sure enthused about dumpster diving; that's awesome! it's so hard to believe that people do not eagerly take advantage of these abundant resources... i have explained it before to people that i look at it like picking apples on fruit trees in the forest. same with picking up cigarette butts in various places. like a free buffet of sorts if you know your rounds well.

i was wondering- let's say you're in a situation where you are in an urban setting and you have a few young (post-nipplage) children to feed; would you feed them food from the dumpster as well?

...and what if the neighbors found out, aw?! then you'd never get invited to the soccer-mom pool social!

Oh I certainly would! I might be a little more cautious about disease because their immune system might now be as strong as mine...but then again, the only way for it to get stronger is allow for them to "get sick"...not that I would force them to get a disease of course. (we pamper ourselves and babies way too much if you ask me!)

I've found plenty of fresh fruits and veggies that they could partake in as well. Not only that, like I said, Ive found kids toys, and I'm sure i would find some crib stuff or even a carriage!

Hopefully though, I will be in a situation when I have kids where there wont be any dumpsters or waste like that. And my kids will probably sleep in a comfy pile of hay or fur with a bundle of other kids... that lifestyle sound enticing at all?

That's pretty cool to hear! It takes an open mind to be able to feel on one end of the spectrum and then switch around when given good evidence! I applaud you!

But the food situation isn't much different! Interesting that we trust complete strangers behind closed doors to restaurant kitchens...but are totally against the idea of picking up a completely fine box of pizza sitting on top of some other boxes and eating it.

Oh man...Hopkinsville...also there was this grocery store there that had like...25 packages of the already cooked chicken that was shrink wrapped...the really expensive stuff that you just needed to put in the microwave. Yum! It was a pretty good treat to have while traveling since all we had been eating until then was microwave Ramon and mac'n'cheese and peanut butter and banana sandwiches!

I LOVE HOPKINSVILLE!

Cool poll. I lose the ability to reply correctly in the morning, this reply was directed to Free Laws.

I used to dive in my old punk and disorderly days in Myrtle Beach. Aaah, the vagrant life, squatting and such.....takes me back.

The Krispy Kreme was our oasis in the night, they threw away the older donuts in boxes inside clean bags. I think they were kinda lookin out for us like you and Blissed have mentioned.

One of my friends over here explained to me how she knows this guy back home who pretty much dumpster dives for a living. Now, hes a meth addict, but a cool, nice guy non the less. He has been doing this for about 15 years or so and has all these spots that he hits regularly and I guess he gets some pretty nice shit. TV's, Jewlery, Furniture, CD's, Art, all kindsa shit. He sells alot of it and always gives gifts to people.

Only 3 years. I lost faith in the scene and had pressure from my mother to move back home and help her.

Great times, though. I wonder sometimes what I'd be like now if I'd stuck around...

You talkin about your dirty smelly dumpter in allies? No I never get near those things. But I have gone to junkyards and excess salvage supply shops---fixed up a few things and sold them for good money. Is this what your talking about? I dont think many people who have eneouph money to have a computer to type on will actually go digging through a dumpter for food

HAHAHAHAHAHA, that is so true with cigarette butts. When I was working at the pub people would leave their half smoked cigarettes and cigars outside to smoke later. Of course most of the time the drunk bastards would forget about the leftover tobacco was outside. Well the next morning I would see several different people ranging from older Tweeked out Black guys to high skewl kids coming by making the rounds for the left overs! The older black dude would wave at me, and I would wave back. Pitty someone becoming that way I felt.

Also on the Subject of Dumpster Diving, not many people understand the treasures which could be found at a phamacies dumpster after they have closed for the night. Broken pills and used up bottles of various Liquid opiates, sometimes 10's of MLs even; the pharmacist would just not bother with what was left and throw it away. Generally Schedule II drugs should be desposed of properly, but that doesn't always happen. PhreeX from Bluelight even wrote up a little tek about dumpster diving but then removed it, going through the ins-and-outs of what to do incase security comes around and hassles you.

i've furnished my entire apartment from 1 dumpster... tv's, couchs, table, end tables, coffie table, 3 working computer moniters that are bigger than what i was using, a motherboard and pc2700 256mb ram, box spring, dresser drawers, hangers, trash can, chairs, computer desk, entertainment center, some cool 70's wood shelfs, microwave, sterio, a box of porn mags... lamps, file cabinet, movies, books... other various stuff

this dumpster at my complex is fucking sweet, thier's always cool shit, EVERYDAY... i actualy had to stop bringing stuff in, cause the house is getting cluttered.... but the cool thing is that when something cooler comes along, i just take the other stuff back out there and it's like an upgrade...

here's the porn...

I voted the "Never.. ewww gross" one..  Reason being my job.  I own my own business in which i get contract work from morgage companies.  when someones home/trailer gets repossessed i go throw all their shit away.  i don't have to move furniture or anything, just throw all the small shit/clothes/dishes/paper/etc. in bags and chunk em...  takes me about 2-3 hours per, but pays be about 300 bux for each one...  needless to say, some of that shit can get pretty disgusting at times, and if someone were to snatch something from some of these places it'd make me sick... :puke:

You talkin about your dirty smelly dumpter in allies?  No I never get near those things.  But I have gone to junkyards and excess salvage supply shops---fixed up a few things and sold them for good money.  Is this what your talking about?  I dont think many people who have eneouph money to have a computer to type on will actually go digging through a dumpter for food

I actually get food from dumpsters about every other day. Small grocery stores throw out perfectly good produce or slightly damaged packaged food. I've also gotten plenty of pizza for free, especially while traveling.

But good job for scavenging for the alternative money making things!

I just went last night to get some pizza and a cop drove over. He questioned me and said it was illegal, but didn't give me a ticket.

I have gotten hundreds of top-quality books.

Other things:

Moped! (needed carb rebuild, it still worked!)
Clothes (I have found plastic-package brand-new clothes.)
Lamps.
Fans.

Living in apartments meant automatic dumpster-diving. Never missed anything GOOD. I left a LOT of stuff for others that I simply didn't want.

I draw the line at food. I like good, expensive, tasty food, and I can afford it.

I thought i would provide some photos of my latest food score! Mind you, this is a bi-daily thing usually...but today was a particularly productive day!

Here's the dumpster and its goods. Sorry its a bit blurry. See the net shot for a better close up! Look at all that produce! There is so much!!! FREE HEALTHY FOOD!

Close up! See how there is like...no trash in there? just some plastic bags and fruit crate things!

And here is the score laid out on the counter! It actually is more than it looks in this shot. We had three huge backpacks full of food! I'll try and list some of the food: red and green peppers, squash, a bunch of cabbage, potatoes, red and green grapes, five bags of popcorn completely sealed, parsley, apples, oranges, pears, carrots- probably organic, lettuce, about ten things are garlic, bean sprouts... i guess that was about it for today...not bad for having no "real job" and such!
