Me Jars . .
    #590199 - 03/26/02 04:35 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

Welp 70-80% colonization on 11 out of 12 cakes - 1 is 100% done!

I have a couple questions though.

1) Some of my cakes seem to have "shrunk" inside the jars, they are covered with bright white mycelium but the fungus seems to have shrunken the substrate as it covers it and forms a cake, is this normal?

2) Also one of my jars has alot of excess moisture this is probably from my heating source (heating pad), it isnt extreme moisture but its a little puddle so what I did was flip the jar over... any other suggestions or should I just leave it right side up with no flip. PS - I know the dry heat source isnt the best way to go but so far with my setup it was ideal and it worked Im going to make a another incubator and have 2 including my old one soon and the new will be with a fish tank heater using water

3) Is it ok to "birth" my 100% colonized cakes right away or should I wait awhile, I know from reading in teks that it says to wait a week or a couple days but is this necessary, I'll wait 2 days or a week NP but Im just curious if it matters.

Any help you could give would be peachy sank

answer to number 1: yes it's normal, the mycelium will eat up water and nutrients and shrink the substrate down.

Your cake skrinkage is normal. "Like a frightened turtle!" I would try and drain out the water. I would just tilt the jar and drain it out if there is a severe puddle as you described. Or use a straw and suck it out. As for your third question, I would wait. I like to drill holes in my cakes when they are fully colonized after I birth them. I use these holes for water intake. Occasionally I'll have a cake with a non-fully colonized center. this leaves open substrate which usually just grows over with mycelium in a day or two, but it also provides a great opportunity for contams to grow and prosper. I recommend patience. Good luck. L8rs.

1) normal
2) also normal but, the puddles didn't come from your heat
source.
In my opinion, the benefit of an aquarium heater isn't wet
heat, it's precise heat. When you get your aquarium heater
right, seal the top of the container with foil so the moisture
doesn't come out. An incubator with water condensing all
inside of it is an ideal place for contams to set up camp.
It's also a good idea to always flip the jars when they are
about half done. It drains the CO2, and the puddles will be
soaked up by the verm layer.
3) I say birth em. With some strains it is beneficial for that last
night in the jars, to be spent in the frig. But if you do this be
sure to retape the holes and retighten the lid. There are all
kinds of nasties that live in the frig.
Hope that helps. :peace:
Suck it out with a straw! That's really funny!
