ok, a friend has had some jars going for a while here, one jar is colonising, slowly but surley, and trying different things, my friend turned the jar upside down just out of curiosity. Im sure he'll let us all know if theres any noticeable change. Also, taking the tape off the holes? wouldnt this be a contam risk?

I remember reading about taking your jars (BR/VERM in this case), removing the tape you have over the innoc. holes and setting them lid side down until they finish colonizing? Is this preferable or just one method.
Yes take off the tape and flip the jars. This will help colonize the rest of the jar. It's the only way to go!

It's all personal choice. I like 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir....its just easier to make for me. I have used other casing materials... including ones with oyster shell. I have oyster beds less than 2 miles from my house...free oyster shells. I don't even bother with it cause Verm and Coco Coir doesn't need it. If you are going to use peat...you better add oyster shells or Calcium Carbonate to buffer the pH of peat moss in the casing layer. And Yes...deeper substrates make bigger fruits. good luck!

That is in my opinion the only way to go .. Quote:

Yes it will... .Air exchange shouldn't be a problem if you are following any jar TEK.( loose lids..holes in lid with foil on top..etc). Flipping the jar and giving it a good bang or two serves for a purpose to give room to colonize the bottom/top of the jar.. Doing that may release some CO2.. but that in itself is far from an air exchange.(something has to go out and then in to be considered an exchange). I flip my jars at around 80%..

You can follow the tek
60/40 Verm and Coco Coir Casing Tek
Be very sterile. Clean everything...the counters the floors. Cover up stuff when you are not using it. If you don't have a glovebox or a flowhood...spray alot of Lysol into the air. Use a surgeon's mask or a dust mask. Keep your hands clean...and your fingernails trimmed or clean under them. I use anti-bacterial soap and then alcohol...I hate gloves.
As far as casing:
I spread my substrate out as evenly as possible. I use around 3/8" to a 1/2" of casing material...spread that as evenly as you can also. If I have some mycelium come up through the casing layer I patch it. You want the mycelium to start coming through the casing layer evenly. I hardly ever have to patch a casing layer.
I use a cool mist humidifier in my green house. I keep my green house at 95%+ humidity til I get pins then cut back on the humidity. I fan 2 to 3 times a day. I mist 2 times a day....very lightly. I give them 12 hours of light per day.
Things to look out for:
White puffy looking stuff that isn't mycelium...its the beginning of Green Death. Don't let your casing get too dry...Don't let it get too wet.
Make sure your fruiting temps, humidity and air exchange are ideal.
Read all that you can on casing in the FAQ.
good luck!

My friend is currently in his first grow and though he made some mistakes.. he thinks that he has learned from them. One thing that he would have done differently... is some how seperate the dry verm later from the cake.. he was gonna use alumminium foil but it was a bitch to do with ripping.. the reason he wanted to do this.. is because.. the jars seem to shrink kinda when they are growing.. not to mention when you flip the jars upsidedown to speed up the colinization.. the cake shifts down and compacts to the dry layer.. anyway.. my friend waited FOREVER for the top part of his jars to colonize... he decided to say screw it and birth the cakes.. he saw mycelium growing up through the dry layer! Maybe because putting it upside made it wet.. anyway.. this little bit at the top that he was waiting on to colonize was actually the dry layer.. be careful for this... my friend thinks his jars inncubated way too long because he was waiting on that part to colonize.. just thought i'd add that.. have fun
