The Nature of this Moment

The present we experience now is much too fleeting to remember until after it's over, that is, after the smallest measurement of time that the human mind goes by. Between then and the memory the moment is purely subconscious, reactive and existing. After it, the memory is purely reflective, conscious and nonexisting, except in our memory. The action is the present, and the realization of the action makes it into the past.

The future is the unrealized action that will soon be acted upon and made into a realization

So what is living in the "now," then? That exhalted state of living in the present, people will reflect on, and think about, and examine, but by doing this they make the present the past constantly.

There is no difference between the past reality and a past dream if there is no realization that the ego makes between reality and dreaming then, so not only is the future a many-pathed venture, so is the past. The only moment everything meets is in the present, an hourglass in which the many paths of sand will fall through into the many paths of the past grain of sands. By going into the future the past may be changed, and the memories will confuse each other into a jumble until we release them

I think what you're saying is that our memories are quantized, and consciousness is just the remembering of these tiny moments in your brain, after the fact.

That may be true, but I believe that consciousness itself is free flowing.

To give an analogy, the music you listen to might actually just be tiny molecules and atoms travelling in a wave. So it is really just tiny movements of molecules in your ear. But the perception we experience is not the same thing, and is something that is created inside our head and cannot be explained by logic.

I mean, you can't explain what it is to actually hear to a deaf person. But you can explain those tiny molecules moving... but that isn't really the same thing, is it?

In the same way, I believe our consciousness is not really the same as these memories we are recieving from the outside world. Past, present and future (if in reference to the universe) would not be totally accurate since any present we experience is probably an illusion and really part of the past.

Well, I'm not sure if you'll agree with me at all, but I thought I would add this, and good post! :cool:

But then again,  you are not really here, are you? You are the ravus of the past... :frown:

I think he's simply stating that, if we are conscious of any aspect of the present moment, then that consciousness is no longer experiencng that moment in that moment. In order to process the sensory information, there will be a slight delay, right? :grin:

The sensory devices interact with reality in the moment, and as we perceive that information collected as a result, interpret it, give it meaning, and process it in order to select portions of it to send to the conscious mind, that moment in which the data was collected has already passed. :shocked:
