So, would you limit yourself this way in other aspects of your life? There are whole worlds of great music beyond the rock/folk spectrum.

And you are the reverse. Music from all points on the spectrum has enjoyable qualities. I like pop, rock, folk, techno, classical, and world music. I do have a special fondness for Pink Floyd and Bach.

Where did you get that idea? I have listened to much classical and decided I really don't care for it. I like Yes and E.L.P. because they took some favorite Classical music and fused it with rock, and IMO greatly improved on it. Almost all the members of Yes were classically trained musicians and E.L.P. made Pictures at an Exibition come alive.

Yngwie Malmsteen is fast but low on content...sorry. I'll take Steve Vai anyday. It should be noted that Steve Howe of Yes is every bit the guitarist that Vai is. Come on...ever heard Mood for a Day. It is one of my favorite peices to play. I also enjoy Mike Hedges.

I prefer myself on drums now that I have real drums set up and just waiting to be wailed upon. Sure beats beating upon the steering wheel although I can get quite a few sounds out of the steering wheel. Sounds do not include blowing the horn although an occasional accidental horn blowing has occurred...

Certainly, Steve Vai is quite the accomplished musician, probably the one that I look up to the most. I was simply referring to Yngwie Malmsteen in the context of classical works. I'm not sure on the Steve Vai to Steve Howe comparison, as I haven't heard much of Steve Howe's works, but I would be truly surprised if he was equal in degree to Steve Vai (I am aware of Steve Howe's reputation as a virtuoso as well :wink:).

Steve Howe has more range of styles, his music is more mature, and he has equal the technique. Vai does have a bit more speed. Any listen to Close to the Edge or Fragile by Yes will make his ability apparent.

Of course they're inseperable to a point, but give me emotional depth and communication over technique any day...imperfection is beautiful.

Absolutely. Jazz and improvisation is all about "imperfection".

I make sounds. I feel sounds. I am beautiful. Who or what music is "perfect" anyway?

Even Britney Spears isn't perfect although if you asked her you might get a different opinion. It's safe to say her thighs are getting a little thick...

Why have one over the other. Without both a musician sucks.

Musicians in jazz are some of the most technically gifted in the industry...don't fool yourself with that imperfection line. Improvisation requires a high degree of musicality and skill....it is not imperfection, but music in it's most perfect form.

Jazz is both technically based and abstract and a matter of performing both. Based on the duality it can be considered a nearly "perfect" music. That is why I used the term "imperfection" in quotes.

Perfection is more limited to the blues done with conviction.
