Tara Goddess or an Imposter
    #3852653 - 03/01/05 04:50 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

i recently got this statue that i thought was of the goddess Tara, but upon further research i think it may actually be Lakshmi or another goddess. i think in her right hand she has a sting of gold coins, and it;s either a shell or a flower in her right hand, hard to tell. if there is anyone out there that follows Hindu religion and knows what this statue is really a representation of please inform me. I thought it was of the goddess Tara, but can not be sure... anyone know?????

That is the male deity Chenrezig - Tibetan name for the Indian Avaloketsvara - peaceful deity of Compassion.

White Tara has breasts, 7 eyes (4 palms, 2 soles and Ajna) and is in the contemplative lotus posture. Green Tara does not have the eyes of omniscience and her right foot is extended in the gesture of action.

I purchased both Chenrezig and White Tara recently ( www.tibetspirit.com ) to accompany Mahakala and his consort Vishnamata (actually, an antique that we found in a flea market). We wanted a balance of masculine and feminine deities of Compassion in our meditation room.

I am impressed with your scholorship.

Thanks Huehuecoyotl.
I shall accept a compliment without deferring to a more knowledgeable expert.

I will add that theologian Paul Tillich once said that "Religion is what a man does with his solitude." I guess I've spent a lot of time alone.

Tara is on the right here. This is a 6" Tibetan figurine. Sorry it's a bit blurry, my digital camera is a finicky that way sometimes.

Just take some extra time to contemplate their suffering, and compassion will arise spontaneously. Don't give in to the more selfish minds that are easily frustrated and impatient, especially in times of stress or adversity.

What's your line of work?

Yes, Chenrezig.

An image of an almost identical-looking, identified statue:
http://www.anthea2.freeuk.com/indbrass/chenrezig.jpg

Description:

"Four-armed Chenrezig is a form of Avalokiteswara. He wears all sorts of ornaments, and has four arms, carrying a rosary in one right hand and an open lotus flower in one left hand. The other two hands are raised to the chest with the palms joined in Namaskar Mudra, holding a round jewel (a symbol of knowledge)."
