I can't stand The Grateful Dead

I something wrong with me? Am I missing something? I admire the Dead for their ability to succeed financially without selling out. That's awesome! But their music makes me cringe. It is so unpleasantly sloppy, everything is always out of tune, and it goes on...and on...and on...same song...for half an hour...it never seems to transcend, just never-ending guitar solos and off-key bluegrass harmonies. Ugh!

As a musician, the Dead have sounded to me to be in poor form. Am I OK?

I think what people enjoy about the Dead is the scene, rather than the music. Everyone hanging out, listening to some jams by a group of guys just like you. Listening to the music brings you back to the show. But that's only how I see it.

When I go to see The Dead(or any other band of that nature) I go for the music. If someone is going for the reason other than to listen to music than they are going for the wrong reason.

the greatful dead's cultish following is proof positive that people will follow the suckiest band in the world around if there's good dope along for the ride...  It seems to me that LSD is the ONLY reason that the Dead were popular...  because they sure as hell are not a very good band, from an objective point of view anyway. 

You could have the best sounding, most thought-provoking band in the world and if there weren't acid at the shows, those fake-ass hippies wouldn't show up. 

The fact of the matter is that drugs have a heavy influence on people.  If the only way to get good acid was to go to see Barney the Dinosaur in concert, then people would follow that motherfucker around, too.

its funny to think that a subculture which considers itself anti-materialist is so easily swayed by a material substance like LSD...

:shrug: they're my favourite band, and quite often the only band i listen to. i'm a musician as well, and consider myself to have quite a discerning music taste when it comes to jazz, progressive, hip-hop, electronic, etc - but the dead causes my soul to dance against my will.

i long ago gave up trying to convince people that they are amazing, though - i'd rather just listen to the music play :gd_icon:
