download a live show (like the one above  ).. go to the many threads created about favorite live shows and download one of those shows.. preferably 73 or 77, or some old pigpen era dead (late 60's) all of its pretty good really but some is hit or miss.. and theres plenty of good stuff in the countless studio albums. crank it, listen to the whole show, and be careful, cuz you might get hooked!

some energy? i think the guys from the grateful dead poured their heart and souls into their music. i find more energy in the deads music than i have found in most bands. it might just not be the type of energy you're looking for though.

It's a reciprocal energy, too. I didn't really get the dead until I saw them, then it was like I was seeded and something grew inside. Ever since, listening to live grateful dead shines a light on that, and I just love it. And the audience contributes and gives that x factor right back (or at least they did; I haven't seen em since Jerry died).

try some different songs.. i wouldnt consider "the other one" mellow. i would call it intense if anything. granted, it can flow into very mellow parts, but when i hear that bass and drum groove at the beggining i dont think of mellow at all...
