unfortunately I've heard waaaaayyy too much of their music, thanks to my loser friends. "Duuuuuuude maaaaaan, you GOTTA listen to this, it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE, dude..."
personally I've never seen what the big deal was about them. They don't stick out to me as a particularly good band, and in fact I could probably think of about 1,000 other bands I would rather spend my time listening to.
It seems to me that most GD fans like their music for sentimental reasons. At least, thats as much as I can discern. Its kind of hard for me to grok why anyone would be all about them... I mean, I don't think that they are a terrible band, I just don't see why their followers are so fanatical.
It really kind of creeps me out; hanging out with a bunch of deadheads is like hanging out with a bunch of christians, except instead of Jesus its Jerry...

I am no deadhead or hippie, really. I dont not like the music for sentimental reasons alone and to insist that is the case is just condescending. I simply love their sound and their lyrics.
Debating music itself is pointless - either you get it or you dont. Debating cultural revelency and impact as well as creativity is definitely worthwhile. And anyone who has paid attention and knows about the band and their history cannot dispute the power the dead have had in these realms.
And what followers of any band or cultural icon are not fanatical? Isnt fan derived from the word fanactical? I've met too many dorks that are obsessed with Tool and think that Maynard dork is a god.

yeah, I think the people who worship 'reverend maynard' are equally as gay as the suckers of Jerry's cock.
I guess at some point in my life I just stopped idolizing musicians to that extent. I mean, they are just entertainers... There are way more important people in the big scheme of things. And music has never 'changed my life'... I mean, its just entertainment.
It gets my goat when dumb kids idolize musicians as if they were God and then ignore the people who have REALLY positively effected the course of human events... people like scientists and leaders and pioneers. I idolize the people that invented all the cool shit that makes life enjoyable a lot more than some idiot singing his opinion while plunking out a tune on a guitar... I mean entertainers are a dime a dozen, but real heroes only come around once in awhile...
I guess it just pisses me off when people talk about jerry garcia like he invented the printing press or something... It just goes to show how shallow people can be... they put the most pointless shit on a pedastal and ignore what is really important... all while claiming to 'keep it real'

i don't see why an artist, or even more so, and entire movement of art and culture, can't have a major impact on society-as-a-whole. in the words of joseph campbell, himself a scientist of some reknown, "the Deadheads are doing the dance of life and this I would say, is the answer to the atom bomb."

I like probably a baker's dozen worth of the Dead's songs, the rest just don't please my ear. There's some some good material among all the other "crap"

It's all a matter of opinion J. You use words like "dumb kids" and those "people who talk about jerry garcia..." and go on to critize these people as being shallow. In the word's of Howard Stern
"Opinions are like ass-holes. Everyone's got one but they all stink."
Relax. It's just music.

I've never been in the GD. Too "peppy" for me. I like my music dark, interesting and good.

i listened to the dead for a long time before i even started trippin...
i like the energy that comes with the music.. its just one of those things you have to be able to visualize.
take lazy lightning from dicks picks 3 for example. the song just keeps getting more and more intense. like the end of most songs, they get really bad ass, then end right when you were jammin it.. well, the dead took that, stopped time, and streched it out. create a series of peaks and valleys, each peak and valley slightly higher than the last...

well, lets see... I can name a few of my favorite musicians, or at least the ones who spring immediately to mind...
Nine Inch Nails Soundgarden Tool Notorious BIG The Doors Dead Kennedys Prodigy Slayer Astral Projection and of course, Alice in Chains
basically, like that other guy said, I like stuff thats dark, complicated, and has substance. If I wanted fluff I would turn on Radio Disney.
anyway, thats just my opinion, I'm not trying to cram it down anyone's throat. Its not like I post lyrics every day and talk about what I listen to incessantly. I consider it my business and I feel no need to validate my fandom by converting others... unlike SOME people... And I sure as hell keep my fandom in perspective...
Anyone who thinks that a musician had the same social impact as the printing press or the polio vaccine... needs to get their priorities straight. Entertainment is not as important as survival. For someone to idolize entertainers over scientists... well thats a lot like paying NFL players millions while public schoolteachers are starving...

I think hunter's lyrics are dark and mind-bending. Music doesnt need to be hard or fast to be dark and twisted. Darkness can be subtle - I think it is quite successful.

I meant the actual music. Some of the lyrics are dark, yes, but the music isn't dark. When someone says to me, hey man, I've been kinda bummed today, lets put in something dark and aggressive (like Alice In Chains, AMAZING band by the way ) GD is not going to come up. That's all I meant.

Alice In Chains? When you said dark and good I thought you meant like Merzbow or Emperor or something. Alice in Chains are just a pop metal band. The Dead were far more radical, musically, conceptually and lyrically.

I guess I dont dig on the testosterone aggressive metal-derived thing. I listened to AIC when I was in jr. high back in the mid-90s - I guess they were cool then when all I wanted was hard and crunchy with a dark-facade.

see, this is the kind of musical pissing contest I was hoping to avoid...
its all just a matter of personal preference.
the main reason I don't like deadheads is because they tend to be all in your face about it. Like they are evangelists for Jerry Garcia or something.... I mean, I've never spent a long period of time trying to convince someone to like a band... If someone doesn't like what I listen to then thats fine... We all have our own opinions, and I think thats great. I mean, its better than being a hivemind like the borg or something...
hippies tend to have way too many opinions in common if you ask me. It seems like they are all so afraid to go against their crowd. Maybe I'm wrong, but thats the way it seems to me. Hippies are the borg, and they want to assimilate everything into one big gay-ass love in. Not me, I need my space, nigga. You can kill your egos all you want, I'm just fine with mine.
