Nine Inch Nails Soundgarden Tool Notorious BIG The Doors Dead Kennedys Prodigy Slayer Astral Projection and of course, Alice in Chains
basically, like that other guy said, I like stuff thats dark, complicated, and has substance. If I wanted fluff I would turn on Radio Disney.
Not to be a dick but only like 3 of those musicians are "dark". NIN has sold out, Tool is semi-dark I suppose, and slayer still rocks out with there cocks out though. Instead of dark you should have put punk.

Check out these, if you listen to them, listen to the song in entirety before you make a decision whether you like it. I know I like it. Grateful Dead is like licorice some people can't stand it while others are in love with it.

Just fire up a j and listen to any live version of Jack Straw. If that doesn't sell you then fuck it, stick with that MTV bullshit (this isn't intended for the OP).
To the OP: Remember, despite all the live hoopla The Dead are actually masters in the studio. Their greatest achievements were in the studio not on stage, Terrapin, American Beauty, Workingman's Dead.
There's a lot of great melodies and harmonies in there man. Open yourself up to it!

Please you are so full of yourself. The only reason you dislike them is because people think they are amazing, so you try and seperate yourself, for some social reason. The fact is, is that every member of the band were really good at their instruments, if you dont like their music, hooray, but can you really call them sloppy? Do you even play an instrument? Are you aware of what jazz is?

while everybody touts american beauty and workingmans dead as the best dead ever (and certainly, in terms of studio production and reaching that 'roots' feeling, they were), i'd say blues for allah is much more true to their sound than any other studio album they made. and even then, why not listen to a dick's picks, or stream a show off of archive.org?

no, the reason I dislike them is because their sound doesn't appeal to me. The reason I dislike their fans is because they are unwilling to accept the fact that I just don't enjoy the music. Its not that I haven't tried. Like someone else already said, different strokes for different folks. You can say you hate my favorite band, and its not going to bother me in the slightest, because other people's opinions just really don't mean that much to me. On the other hand, if I say I hate the Greatful Dead, every 'head in the tri-state area comes crawling out of the woodwork trying to convince me otherwise.
I don't like the greatful dead. get over it Believe me, I don't lose any sleep at night because you like them and I don't. And I wouldn't lose any sleep if you told me you hated my favorite band.

yeah, I've been playing guitar for about 8 years. I'm no Satriani, but I think I can tell when something is off rythm or out of tune. And I can also tell when something is technically fine but just lacks any real substance...

I heart .
They were IMHO the greatest band that could ever exist. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. You anti-deadheads should try listening to some of Jerrys stuff he did without the GD. Download some tunes him and David Grismond did together and tell me what you think

To be perfectly honest I don't like 'em either. People that I know who are amazing musicians say that the Dead are insanely talented musicians. I'll take their word for it.
I respect them for what they've accomplished.
Me, I'm more into Bjork, Radiohead, Squarepusher, BDP, MSI. I could go on forever but I doubt anyone is interested in what music I like. =)

The Grateful Dead started in 1965 and stopped touring (as "The Dead" that is) in 2004. Second longest running touring band of all time. (the stones are first)
Though their music is over half a century old and their leading member has been dead for over a decade yet, the music is still as alive as ever. More and more (young) people are getting turned on to the dead, even though most of them have never even gotten the chance to see them. In every new generation, there is a new generation of dead heads. Every person i know, who really gets the dead's music is a better person for it.
You can say that the dead are a mix of bluegrass, rock, folk, jazz, pop, ect but, in the end they are greater than the sum of their parts.
Its really kinda pointless to try and explain the dead to people who dont "get it."
As evan has said many times in private conversation, "the grateful dead's music just tickles my soul" I totally agree.
btw, evan that is quite a delightful morning dew. thanks for sharing.

Ive been playing classical guitar for about 5 years, so I also have an appreciation for good guitar playing. I personally dont like Satriani, his guitar playing is great technically as you say, but has no emotion. Literally none. Garcia, is a very good guitar player, maybe not Satriani in terms of tricks, but certainly decent. The part that seperates him is the emotion. His solo's are very good, very jazzy, not metalish with no depth to them. Hes not up there masturbating all over his guitar. Also when in my post did I ever say I even like the grateful dead?

i'm a big fan of the grateful dead, but there's more to it than the acid and the whole "scene", which is often cultish and creepy. i do agree that their popularity rose in sync with the whole counter culture, and if those two things had not coincided, they would not have the iconic status that they have. i listen to the dead for many reasons, one being that i can hear their influences such as doc watson and john coltrane in their music. i'm really into jazz, and i enjoy listening to improvisation. they are definitely not perfect musicians..it's often sloppy and out of tune, no argument there. i have no problem saying "jesus man, change the song that sounds like crap"...but i know that there are some real gems in there, and being a musician i know what it feels like to connect with the people you play with, and whenthe grateful dead really groove, man there's no stopping it. as a drummer, i really respect mickey and bill, they are always solid, even when the other guys were too fucked up to play well. above all, i feel good when i listen to the grateful dead i have criticisms of their music and some of their extreme fans just as you do, but the whole bantering back and forth about whether or not they are a waste of time to listen to is ridiculous. different music affects people different ways, and i think there's something to learn any time music is created. whether you personally enjoy it or not is your own personal preference. oh, and all the tool haters can suck it as well hehe..danny carey is one hell of a drummer. these musical argument threads are great

dude, I'm going to leave this discussion because I'm tired of it. I just have one final thing to say:
Its ironic that in a thread entitled 'I can't stand the Greatful Dead', the majority of posters are Deadheads trying to convince a small minority that they are wrong in their decision not to like GD. You guys are like freakin evangelists. You just really can't stand the idea that someone out there disagrees with your taste in music. Maybe you should worry more about controlling your own mind instead of trying to influence the minds of others.
You should sit down and think about why other people's opinions are so important to you. Why do you seek the validation of others' approval?
It does you no harm for me to say I hate the greatful dead. It neither picks your pocket nor breaks your leg. So get over it. Hippies are all about acceptance right? well accept this:
THE GREATFUL DEAD BLOWS (at least in my opinion)

this is called a discussion forum for a reason. someone posts a topic or rant or opinion and others respond.
it's not a matter of evangelizing, it's a matter of calling out the bullshit criticism people have put forth in course of discussion.
I am sure if I started a thread about how alice in chains was a trendy, talentless MTV-culture pop band with a boring metal facade and whose bulk audience consists of angst-ridden 8th graders, you'd try to convince me otherwise, right?

try it and see.
or you could start a thread called 'I love the Greatful Dead'
haven't seen one of those in awhile
then all you deadheads could get together in your thread and pat eachother on the back for listening to such groovy tunes. I promise I will stay out of it
