peat moss and vermiculiate?

Can I use peat moss and vermiculite for a top and bottom casing layer, or should I just use vermiculite and Coco Coir? I want to wait till I have some experience before trying to use straw or manure. Also, do you really have to serlize your casing mix?

If it's your first casing, it might be better if you just tried a casing layer on the top.

If you use peat, you will have to adjust ph with calcium carbonate or hydrated lime. Gypsum is a good stabilizer to add as well. Just a few percent will do ya.

I just re-read what you posted and it looks like you are just casing spawn jars or BRF cakes.
If you don't want to mess around with all that, you can just case with moist verm. You can sterilize it in the microwave.
