    #4828914 - 10/20/05 09:51 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I use peat moss for my casing layer and I got some trouble with it.I think its the fault of the peat moss but I'm not sure. Its the 2 time that I got trichoderma mold on the mushroom.I pasteurize the peat moss for 1 hour at 170F and I add 2.5% of calcium carbonate.Anyone got sucess with peat moss? What can I do?Here some pictures.

Thanks

I think you need a lot more than 2.5%

I use peat in the 50/50 tek, just as it says as far as the amounts go. i put it in a deep pan and then put it in the oven @210 for about an hour. i haven't had any issues with mine doing it this way...

i would add peat moss, vermiculite, and some limestone in for a good casing layer.

heat at 5 minutes, let sit, and everything works like a charm.

I use 40% peat moss, 40% vermiculite, and 20% crushed oyster shells.  I put it all in a pillow case and boil it on high for about 20-30 minutes.  Haven't had any problems yet. :peace:

i use 2 cups peat : 2 cups ver : 1 cup crushed oyster shells. add as much as need for my casings in a large plastic bowl. add water till its just a lil to wet. cover with syran wrap. place in microwave & microwave on high for 2 min. let cool down a lil shake it around to stir it up. i repeat this 2 more times (the extra water will evaporate out of the casing while microwaving) and then when its cold down i case my stuff and store the extra in a ziplock baggie to use for patching after flushes. i do not remove the syran wrap from the bowl till im ready to case. it forms an air tight seal when its heated up in the microwave. i have had no problems with contams using this method. atleast not till like the 4th, 5th flush when the casing is spent anyway..

Instead of pasturising your casing layer, sterilise it at a higher temperature. I think the problem may lie elsewhere, maybe in your fresh air exchange or in your fruiting chamber. Give some more info and some pics of the fruiting chamber.

Is the big unit next to the Martha the fan? Im not sure why you need that.... Regardless, you probably need to sterilise the whole set up thoroughly inside (and out) before you do anything else.
