Bruising effecting psilocybin
    #5378382 -

I know that when mushrooms bruise the blueness comes from oxygen reacting to the psilocybin, The question is..Does that blue reaction render those molecules of psilocybin useless because they were involved in a chemical change? Where i am going with this is wondering if excessive handling of mushrooms will yield in less viable psilocybin?

I'm not so sure that's correct. Other, non-active mushrooms also bruise blue/green.

For the sake of demonstration, let's assume this was true.
Let's assume that during handling you damage the top 0.5 mm of the mushroom surface, and by doing this, let's assume all actives in this area are gone.
To make things easier to calculate, I will assume the mushroom consists only of the stem, with a diameter of 10 mm.
So, by destroying the actives in the top 0.5 mm layer, you destroy
(((10 / 2)^2) - ((9.5 / 2)^2)) / ((10 / 2)^2) = 0.0975 ~10% off all actives.

So, worst case, 10 %, which is negligible.

I know that there are other species that lack psilocybin that demonstrate this color change but i was under the impression that with the Cubensis mushrooms, that was the reason. Here is a quick cut and paste from a site. I have seen this info in some other texts too, but....Its something that would be good to know the answer to

"Many mushroom enthusiasts may or may not be aware of the notable bluing reaction which occurs in mushrooms containing psilocybin and/or psilocin. The bluing reaction is an indication of the presence of psilocybin and psilocin in several genera of wild mushrooms. Laboratory and field research has shown that when the flesh of a mushroom which contains psilocybin and psilocin is damaged, scraped, broken or bruised, whether from natural elements (wind or rain, falling leaves, insects, slugs, animals, etc.) or from human handling, an enzyme occurs causing the bruised section of the mushroom to turn from an olive green to blue green color. Oxygen is the cause of this color change and is common in many species of psilocybian fungi.

While there are many species of fungi which are blue naturally, these naturally occurring blue fungi may be poisonous and/or toxic to human consumption. One such species is Boletus cyanescens. However, all Boletus fungi have a porous sponge like section under their caps and do not possess gills like the psilocybian species."

If those numbers are accurately representative of the damage..10% is a fairly significant number IMO

But if higher quality mushrooms resulted from more prudent handling, don't you think it would be worth the effort?

Of course, I am not suggesting you should throw them on the floor and jump on them...

I am just saying that if you are not careful for any reason(stoned, drunk, in love...) that it won't matter much(for me at least...)

If thats true, then y do somespecies of cubinis bruise natrauly? Correct me if im wrong, but doesnt some bruise without even touching them?

If it really was because of pyilocybin/oxygen reactions, that would occur as water evoporates and air is drawn into some of the dehydrating cells
