Oxygen

i will soon be getting acces to an oxygen tank. could i use it to fan out my terranium, for example have 2 holes in it, one at the top, and one on the bottom with some sort of valve that prevents air exchange unless i open it, then open both valve's and then put the oxygen to the top hole?

what kind of effect would pure oxygen have on the mushrooms?

no, it's not liquid oxygen. just compressed oxygen. the kind they use for welding.

the reason why they use it for welding with acedilene or proane is to give it a constant supply of oxygen, the oxygen does not burn. it's like blowing on coals. some people do use liquid oxygen but i think that's cause the tank holds like 100x more oxygen in it. Or something to that effect.

anyone have any expericne with it?

Nothing grows from scratch very well under pure oxygen. The tests on animals they did back in the 60s with pure oxygen made the offspring blind. And from what I've read its the CO2 that causes the really rampant mycelium growth.

By all means go ahead cause I doubt anybody's done it, but you're prolly just wasting time and a tank.

Oxygen itself doesn't burn.....but anything flamable in an oxygen rich environment will go up like gasoline!!

ok, that's very intersting. i was just trying to find a way to fully displace all the 'bad air' in the terranium. fanning sounds ineffective to displace all the air.

i have thought of another way that could quickly and efficently exchange the air. get the same 2 hole/valve system but put a pump for an air bed to the top hole.

another intersting thought came to mind. in a sealed room with no air movement, wouldn't all the air seperate? like the co2 would fall to the bottom, and then have layer's of different gas's in the room?

I recently made such a post ...do search for "pure oxygen" , you will get some other opinions there .
I theorized it would be benificial in controled doses , but yes always keep in mind the risks of an oxygen rich environment , NASA found out the hard way . Flash fried some astros !

ps I think bottom entry would be best , due to this is where co2 lays , we would want to enrich this layer of air , and hopefully kick up co2 or flush it out . But I spose top entry would push it out exit holes in bottom of chamber .
Another thought to ponder ........if pure o2 is not flamable why do hospitals and such say "oxygen in use , no smoking , electronic devices , etc ....... in this area "
o2 from tank opening and "oxygen rich" environments are two different things .

because of temperature, air molecules are always moving and bumping into everything in sight...this is what causes air pressure. Some gasses are really heavy (like Radon) these will go straight to the ground. Smaller molecules howeverare always moving fast enough to get a roughly even mixture. Theoretically, if you cooled a gas to absolute zero...all the molecules would cease to move and the air would probably stratify. In reality, I dont know of any gas that exsists in its gaseous state all the wat down to absolute zero.....most gasses form solids long before they are that cold.
