Knowledge, which is better unknown....
    #5338497 - 02/25/06 05:01 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Ive been thinking about this for a few days.

Is there such a thing as knowledge (truth) which should not be known?

Lets say that certain branches of the government have the ability to prove that aliens exist.
Is that information/knowledge/truth (hypothetically) too "dangerous" or in some way more harmful than disinformation/ignorance/lies?

Is there anything that you wish you didn't know?

quantum physics has a few principles which have basically found out that their are certain aspects of this universe that we are not ever going to understand, perceive or know.

Do you think that certain quantum grasp could be more harmful (to survival) to the galaxy/universe/(alternate universes.... for the feynman lovers) if we knew this information?

I guess its just a lengthy half-assed explanation of whether or not ignorance is bliss, because if it is, we'll never know.

Its more harmful to not have a more full understanding of the nature of reality.

There is not such a thing as truth that should not be known, as there is no standard that distinguishes truths in such a matter. If people have difficulty accepting reality for what it is, then it is they that become dangerous, not the information and truth itself.

Ultimately all truth is liberating.

there are things which some people are not yet ready to know.

And thus they will not know these truths until they are ready.

From the fruit of the Tree in the garden of Eden was forbidden knowledge, look what happened there. Perhaps the knowledge of the atom bomb should not be known. But I don't think that we can stop "finding out" things like this. We are cursed to seek the mystery.

Now, this is where I get tangled up in this.....

the term harmful, which I even used, is dictated from the perspective of what?
Ultimatly, there would have to be a consciousness greater than that of your own to make such a judgement regarding the negative or positive characteristics of an action or event which affects the entire universe (but, not that any one action or event is any more of a catalyst than any other).... you would need an omnipotent (and/or) omnipresent perspective/consciousness to be the ultimate judge of this.

here is what it breaks down to, IMO, add if you wish....

1) there is a god, which does not want us to know certain things which is ultimatly for our own good.
2) There is no God, and the endless pursuit of proving a negative will perpetuate an unknown forever.
3) eventually, one day, we will evolve to some point spiritually or mentally enough to grasp what lies beyond Planck's wall (or such).

seems to me the question of the first poster is really "can ignorance ever be bliss"

if you ask me, no...truth conquers all.

I think all of your conclusions are right an exist right alongside each other. Not one has to be right, they are all right. For those that choose number one, well number one looks good. For those that bend toward number two, well you see. Number three is good for futurists. And they all are positions.

No ONE wants to know the ultimate TRUTH, as soon as YOU find IT out, YOU want to forget IT.

You are everything's way of feeling itself.
