I was wondering if mycelium had a smell or if maybe rye + mycelium will create a smell? I have rye in a jar and I was recently moving the jars around and noticed a rather odd smell that I cannot really describe. Any ideas?
My friend claims that mycelium (from p. cubensis) has a very clean, almost sweet earthy mushroomy smell. My friend hasn't noticed a smell from dry rye berries, but claims that they have a "bitter/sharp fresh baked bread" smell after sterilization.
Most contaminates produce some sort of stink. Wet spot (bacillus) produces a nasty rotten apple to dirty socks smell. If a jar doesn't look right, toss it. Some contaminates can make you sick if you breath them in (or eat them).
