rye jar has no results no contam(?) nothing 2 week

I made 8 quart jars of rye grain pc'd and all, 4 of them i put cambos the other 4 I put PR
the pr I made syringes and used them
the cambos i just dropped spores into, in a clean box for both
anyways the cambos seem to be doin find, almost done, but the PR's never grew at all, in a incubator at 82 F , i opened one of the jars of the PR and there is a smell, not stinky socks, not bad apples, more of a musty smell, like something humid sitting around for a while, I dont see any contams, wet spots are not their ( as far as I can tell , they are water spots, very few and in the bottom) could this be a contam? one that you cannot really see? why else would there be a smell? is it just musty "? or should it always smell that rye grainy smell , even if it has been sitting for a while?

The reason that you haven't got any results on this is because its a hard question to answer.

A musty smell could be anything or nothing. It all depends on what you personally think it musty.

Sure your jars can smell kind of musty when you first open it after sitting for days because the air gets stale.

Jars can also smell musty because of some kind of contam.

The reason for no growth most likely is either a contam or that your spores were not good. You could have innoculated when the jar was too hot. Your spores could be too old to be viable. Your spores could have died when they were sitting on the mail truck in the freeezing cold or blazing hot. Who knows.

There are just too many variables to really answer your question.

Along with what Karen said, you might need to wait longer as well. I personally have never had it take longer than two weeks to germinate some very old spores, but I have read in literature that I trust that it can take up to 30 days.
