rusty colored contam? *UPDATED WITH PIC*
    #552427 - 02/15/02 10:51 AM (22 years, 11 days ago)

Couple of my jars have one or more small patches of what looks like a faint rust-like coloring on the substrate (BRF+verm). Is this a contaminant?

Seperate the odd jars from the rest so that if it is contamination there is less chance of it spreading. Keep an eye on the rust spots. If they grow, then it is probably contamination. If they dont, it might not be.

Ok, here's a better description (including locations).

First jar:
There is still no sign of mycelial growth yet (as of day 6). Near the top of the jar, near an innoculation site, there is a faint rusty-red/orange coloring. I wouldn't say it has any shape to it, and it is fairly faint. Best comparison I could make would be a substrate that had a small ammount of orange food coloring added to it.

Second jar:
There is a small new spot of mycelial growth (I hope!). Substrate is fairly wet all over (yeah, too much water in this jar). There is the same red/orange coloring as the first jar, but in various places. The color isn't well defined at all, just a light red/orange tint in a lot of places.

Any ideas? I'm going to let both jars go a few days to see if the coloring gets worse/better or stays the same. Neither jar smells any different than it did to begin with.

Ok. As of day 9 after innoculation:

The "rust-colored" patches are still there in the two jars, but have not grown at all in the past 2 days. The same spots of coloring have appeared in two other jars now, which has me a little worried.

Each patch of coloring is located approximately at the site of innoculation, so I'm hoping it's not from a dirty needle. I was told that it could actually be just rust, which I hope and believe to be the case, due to the fact that each patch of color occurs under one of the holes punched in the lid. Most of the holes have started to rust.

So I'll ask again: does this sound like a contam? Or is it (as I hope) just some rust from the lids?

Sounds like rust from the screw band and/or lid. "IF" it is rust, don't worry about it.

I'm pretty sure it's rust. Hasn't grown or changed since it appeared, which doesn't sound like a contam at all.

Found this image while searching through older posts. Link to the original post is http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Contams&Number=522096&page=4&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=

This is pretty close to what I have in a few of my jars. There wasn't much of an answer in the original post, so I'm trying it again here. Has anyone seen this before? Is it bad? Is it even a contam? I've let the jars that have this coloring continue to colonize for the past few days. The coloring hasn't gone away, but it hasn't gotten bigger or changed at all either.
