Psilo187's bulk substrate question... :-)
    #531771 - 01/26/02 07:50 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

In the tak, he uses 1/2 gallon mason jars and recommends soaking the grain 24-48 hours and draining well. Then filling the 1/2 gallon jars 3/5 -3/4 full of seed. Cook for 70 min. Now how should this PC time be adjusted for quart jars?

BTW did I screw up by rinsing and replacing the soaking water a few times during the 24 hrs?

I say no. I used to PC all grain for 1.5 to 2 hrs after having intermittent contam probs when I first started and was only cooking for an hour.

"BTW did I screw up by rinsing and replacing the soaking water a few times during the 24 hrs? "
I don't think so. But then again, I never used that method of grain prep regularly.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

I see. That begs a question. Your recommending increasing PC times up to 100%. The grain my friend prepared earlier looks a bit darker than when he put in in the jar and it didn't swell up at all after PC'ing. Abslultely no signs of starch or clumping at all. I think he'll try another batch without rinsing. I really think he took all the nutrients by rinsing 3 times in 24hrs. He innoculated with a very fresh tissue culture prepared on a positive pressure glove box so he'll probably assume that wasn't the fault.

I also had a very large pcooker which was always as full as it could get. 60-70 minutes is probably plenty for most people.

I always prepared my grain the same way. rinse repeatedly first to get rid of all dirt/starch/birdkote, whatever. Boil water in a seperate pot. Pour an excess of the boiled water over the grain on a cold burner. Cut the grain's burner on to LOW. Steep on LOW heat for 30-45 min depending on grain. Drain in collander. Rinse again several times very thoroughly. Add to jars.
Never any starchy goo as long as you don't steep too long and burst the grains. Always rinsed thoroghly, and never washed away any nutrients. Mycelium prefers nutrients in the grain rather than on the grain. Bacteria prefers nutrients on the grain rather than in the grain.
If the soaking method didn't work well for you, then I recomend a more standard grain prep as described above. The beauty of Psilo's tek is in the straw and castings. Don't give up on it.
