Bulk Substrate Theory

Could someone please expound upon the theory behind bulk growing (such as with straw). What is occuring? Same kind of colonization as with pf style cake substrate? Why shouldn't a cake just be mixed up and thrown in a bowl with a bunch more of pf style sub. to make a big cake? Etc.
And, is it best to really use bulk amounts of straw and many cakes, or will many "bulk-ed" cakes singularly work themselves out similiarly?

straw and poo is good for bulk substrate because they are probably full of more nutrients and shit that shroomies like to feed off of. if you used a large bowl full of brf/verm it would take months to fully colonize. you would be largely disappointed in yield also. if you want to grow bulk just use poo/straw.
