Bulk substrates: Manure/compost vs. Straw

So dude has been working with composted manure for a while now and has come to the conclusion that it is either hit or miss. One bag/brand will work wonderfully while another won't do shit(pun intended). He has tried dehydrated manure in a bag once, and it reeked of ammonia; being a city boy, he has no way of easily obtaining fresher droppings.
Dude has not yet tried pasteurised straw as a substrate, but is thinking it may be worth it, if it tends to be more reliable. Can anyone with straw experience tell me if it is more reliable than bagged dung/compost?
Also I am pretty sure it is wheat straw that is most commonly used. Is this correct?
And last but not least, I assume straw is a seasonal crop (we live in NE USA), could someone please direct me toward a good place to get it, this time of year?
Thanks

My friend does, but the method is real simple. He does the
pf-tek/mmgg, then crumbles the cakes over pasturized wheat straw, put in bag or rubbermaid and wait three days later for 100% colonization.

My friend bought a large bale of wheat straw from a local feed store not to long ago. It is the only straw he has ever used, and there is plenty left. There was no brand name, it was probably off the field next to the shop. It still had alot of wheat grain on it so he had to go through the straw and take out all the grains. You should read old timer's straw tek, it will help you out. I should thank Pavlov's Dog for introducing my friend to straw. Thanks P DOG!

Okay guys thanks,
Dude will get some straw and try it out.
BBShrizz,
The first type of composted manure he got was from a flower store in Center City Philly and it was absolutely wonderful!! Just perfect for a first attempt. I forget the name, but it came from a company in Lancaster county(mushroom capital of the US). Then he got cheap and went to home depot, bought a bag of composted manure as well as a bag of Dehydrated manure. The dehydrated manure reeked of ammonia, and the composted manure had minimal results. Then he went to a nursery out in the boonies and bought a whole shitload of Black Gold Brand composted manure. The first batch worked okay, then the rest for some reason didn't do jack unless it was thoroughly leached before pasteurisation (even then it left much to be desired). I guess he could take a trip out to Lancaster Co. and get some good manure, but that's a hike...
