Manure compost

Can I go to a local garden store and buy a 40 lb bag of manure compost to use as my substrate? Is there any particular qualities I should look for in the compost mix other than the manure/straw ratio? I plan on pasturizing it using the basic hot water technique and spawning it with grain jars.

there's about an 80% chance that store bought manure/compost won't produce what your looking for :frown:
But you never know you may luck out...
As for what to look for there's no real guidlines it's a crap shoot.
Using the compost as substrate won't work. Spawning the compost with colonized pf cakes or rye/birdseed will :smile:
You should mix the compost with verm and peat moss. Mix it about half and half! Use distilled water to hydrate it, to sterilize it bake the compost at 250 degrees for 90 minutes, after 60mins stir up and return to bake for 30 more mins...
