High Mountain Compost? Bulk Substrates?

Just curious. Is it meant to be used as spawn or casing material or either? Should I save my $$ and find some poo instead? I've had good results using prepackaged coir or peat-based material for casing, but I want to beef up my substrate volume and think that spawn is the way to go. It's been a while since I've grown anything so I want to ease into this and not blow too much cash right off the back. But at the same time, I would rather not be pasteurizing poo in my studio apartment right now. You know what I mean? I appreciate your help :smile:

You wouldn't use it as a casing material because you don't want your casing material to be nutritious. The casing is mainly just to provide moisture for the mycelium below. I suggest using grain to spawn the compost. Then you can case the compost once it's fully colonized. If you want to add volume to your substrate I suggest straw.

As the name high mountain compost suggests, it a compost :wink:
Compost is usually composted raw material consisting of wheat straw, poo, and other stuff. I suggest you read The Mushroom Cultivator by Stamets if you're interested in this (even if your not, its a very very good read) This said, its used as a bulk substrate, which you can spawn with grain or brf etc.

I sterilize my bulk substrate(cow poo,wheat straw) in the PC for 1 hour and hadn't got any problems yet,you can try though everybody would say pasteurization is better.(it's better but PC also works for me)

Pasteurization is better because it leaves some beneficial bacteria in the substrate. Since the spawn is already collonized, the mycelium in the spawn produces enzymes that protect it's "territory" from competing organizms. When you sterilize something, you effectively kill it and just leave the nutrients. You also leave yourself open to contamination because those beneficial bacteria are also "territorial" and will keep mold from collonizing. Pasteurization is also less work; you don't have to break out the PC. It will work both ways, but it's a Stamensonian rule and I trust the Guru.
