Bulk spawn question
#967505 - 10/16/02 10:12 PM (22 years, 3 months ago) |

I _have_ done a search for the information I will be requesting, so before y'all flame me, mellow a bit..
Anyway.. I've gotten pretty good results with both PF cakes and casing crumbled cakes, as well as an outdoor patch that fruited fairly regularly from early august until just recently.. the one thing I haven't been doing is bulk substrates.
In reading most of the bulk logs, it appears that only rye or whole grains are used as spawn.. I'm wondering, couldn't one feasably just use crumbled BRF cakes in poo? (Even if there are better options, this is my sole question.)
Thanks, and hopefully I'll get some pictures back from my outdoor patch so I can scan 'em and show 'em off

Cool, thanks Xic. I remember reading that the first time around when Road posted it, didn't realize (or remember?) that he'd used BRF cakes in one. Although those were casings and not really bulk.. I'll have to give it a shot.

You can use brf cakes, however you must remember that cakes are 75% vermeculite, and therefore they do not go as far as broken up grain, where most of the kernels will represent an "innoculation point" in your compost.

In reply to:

Actually they were bulk substrate and not casings.....they had no casing layer.
Yes you can spawn BRF cakes ino the poo. Either crumble it up or use a food processor.

My bad, I've been a bit sleep-deprived lately.. for some reason when I was writing the reply there I had gotten it into my head that they must've been casings because they weren't a huge boxful (bulk) of substrate. Heh. I goofed.
An' hey, I was wondering, since I know you'll be reading this.. did you ever get pictures of the final product from that particular grow? I know someone else requested it in that thread but never got any. I'd love to see 'em, your shrooms always make me jealous
Anywho, g'nite.. it's 3am in Gotham and I've got courses early tomorrow.

Y'know, that brings up another question I've been pondering.. I know you can do a grain to grain transfer after colonizing a jar, but could you do a grain to BRF transfer? Or even a BRF to grain transfer? (assuming the transferred bit is colonized..) And if not, any idea why? I can't think of a reason why scooping a lump of colonized grain into a grain container would be any less susceptable to contamination than scooping it into BRF, or the other way around.
Something for me to sleep on, if I can ever fall asleep.

3am is a good time to PC, that way by 9 or 10 the jars are ready to innoc. Luckily I've got a 12-set of halfies (BRF/verm) at around 75-80%, so I don't need to do that t'nite.. besides, I'd wake up eveyone else in the house with the rickety old PC I've got.
I've been boiling my jars lately anyway, it's easier and I can fit more jars in my pot than my PC (it's rather tiny).

I dont see why it wouldnt work, but I gauge the chances of contams HIGHER that a simple inocu of honey water. Or just a regular inocu. Unless u have a flowhood, a good re-breather, steryle lab to work in, steryle tools, etc. Latta work, no?

I always find myself up late PC'ing, I like my neighbors to think I am crazy.

Those types of transfers would work just fine.
Yeah, but the only problem is : a sterile envoirnment. Unless you have a flowhood, or a very sterile glovebox, it results in a very high contamination rate....still possible however

I wouldn't mind keeping my neighbors up at 3 (now almost 4) AM, but parents and a 12-yr=old sister might get a bit miffed..ah well.

My wife doesn`t mind as long as she can hear the tv or sleep through it. My neighbours couldn`t care less, plus my garden is 1000sqm so no-one here`s my pc.

I KNEW it was familiar.. Megaman has been my favorite series since the original waaay back when on the NES. I just got (and finished) MMX 5 on PC. Pretty good, but no cool anime cut-scenes like in 4. Unfortunately I don't own a PS1 or 2, so I can't play 6 or the upcoming 7..
Although 7 sounds iffy.. they want to make it a 3d version, but MegaMan Legands didn't do that well (or play well either..). Dunno.
Okay, going to sleep for real now.. well, it's 4:14, maybe I'll wait for 4:20. That should help me sleep

Legends Rocked, for a kiddy game. X6 u can play on yer PC, if you d/l the ISO and turn yer PC into a PSX w/ help from us IRC scripters. X6 also made all X games look like kiddie crap, but this is a bulk post. Not a vid game forum.
