Steamers

Every once in awhile, I try to visit local thrift stores, if I'm in the area. Simply because you can sometimes find GREAT bargain prices on assorted products often used in mycology.

I have found small PC's (that hold 3 quart jars) in perfect working order for $5 or $6 bucks, Honeywell portable Hepa's ($10 range), all sorts of impeller type coolmists & equivalent clones ($3 range), all sorts of ultrasonic humidifiers ($5 or $6 range), good dehydrators ($7 to $10 range), coffee grinders, blenders, air pumps, fans, canning jars, large pots & assorted other useful goodies, all cheap.

Lately, I have noticed a lot of very high end large food steamers on thrift store shelves, usually in the $10 range. Many of which are even equipped with timers & some would appear to hold as many as 8......... 1/2 pint wide mouth jars, or 4 pint wide mouth jars.

I don't do PF style cakes, or fractional sterilization of wbs/grain jars.

But,it would seem to me these food steamers would be excellent for either.

Just a passing thought. :stoned:

Yep. I always presumed that if you steamed grains they would probably find their own moisture content. Never tried it though.
A massive bulk steamer is easily made by putting an element in a 50gallon drum with a rack for jars. One of these could be modified into a giant steamer like that. You could fit 100's of jars in one.

I would still soak wbs/grains 24/36 hours beforehand.

could you use these steamers to sterilize your wbs jars? or could just place them in a large pot with steaming water? im looking for an alternative to using a pressure cooker

The alternative would be "fractional sterilization".

I think they'd be excellent for pasteurising chopped straw.
