This is sooo possible.Went to lowes for about 80.00 you can get everything new.It does drip where you plug in the power steamer.Any suggestions? But you can put something under it.The temps go all the way to 180f.I thought it was at 140f-160f to pasteurize, but i guess 180f will not harm anything. There is soo much room in this monster!!! Thanks alot for the post. It's great.........

180f will harm if pasteurizing poo. I would like to make one and give it a try but I agree it does need some improvements. Im just not convinced the tub will keep a perfect 160-170.

Just a word of advice, if you're planning on put something like this together you might want to make sure you grab CPVC and not just normal PVC because CPVC is rated at 100 PSI @ 180(F) degrees...whereas normal Schedule 40 PVC is only rated 100 PSI @ 73(F) degrees (cold water only).
I guess it's just the organic gardener in me thinking about the highly toxic chemicals being released when the piping is subjected to temps beyond it's maximum rating. I mean, after all, at the end of the day, the point is to put the finished products into our bodies.
As always, YMMV...

i would think that copper piping would work just as well. they even make copper glue for those who dont solder very well. all the same fittings are avalabe and you dont have to worry about temp or pressure.
-------------------- I have been there and back, although it was somthing i had to do i dont recomend it for others, at least not with my travel agent.

how many holes do you poke in the uline bags for the steam to moisturize the compost?

you dont poke holes in it, you just dont completely seal the top of it.

um.. you make it the right moisture level before pasturizing it... then let it cool and use it.

Straight up off the chain idea. I love misappropriation of appliances. my only question is how do you hold the required band of 160-170 degs? Does the steamer coincidently have a output temp of that or do you need it on a timer, which i think would be extremely difficult to calibrate.

Boiling Water = Steam = 212(F) at sea level.
But it's going to start cooling as soon as it gets away from the boiling water and depending on the size, insulation, etc. of your container that you're piping the steam into you might only be able to get the ambient temp to around 180(F).
In my case, my container is a 55-gallon "deck box" and I had to use two steamers to get the temps over 170(F) when fully loaded and that's no good...
The reason most people have a hard time with sterilization is because they fail to realize that it takes a higher temperature outside the pillowcase, quart jar or in our case, the u-line gusseted poly-bags.
It might take 30 minutes before the internal temps of the bags gets to 140(F) and _then_ you're supposed to begin timing out the 60-90 minute duration for the pasteurization.
What you're trying to find out is...
1. how long does it take until my mixture reaches an internal temperature of 140(F) or higher.
2. how long do I need to leave the steamer on after that point is reached...
--- For me it takes 15-30 minutes before the whole load is at 140(F) and then the steamer runs out of water about 45 minutes later (roughly) but the temps stay steady for another 45 minutes before the bags fall back below 140(F) degrees range.
Took me about a week of testing to figure that out...

I agree. Maybe the temp could be adjusted by having a bleed off valve. so once the desired temp is made you can throttle off some of the steam to maintain...... probably need 2 one constantly and one throttled once up to temp??????
why use steam???? can you stick a small ceramic heater in it to help temps come up????? why steam why not just oven??????
