tubs are not air tight. The unit doent produce that much steam either. There is no need for any blow out valves or anything like that. Good luck with the projects!
The wagner will not produce enough steam to pastuerize something this large if the ambient temps are lower than 60 degrees or so, I know from experience. You would be sitting there 4 hours later after 2 refills wondering why the internal temps are just now getting to 100f.

sorry to raise an old thread but i read this liked the thought and ingenui9ty of it all, and think the idea should be shown again but im going to stick to my
1 . boil one gallon of water 2. put brick of coir in 5 gallon homer bucket 3. put two cups of vermiculaite in bucket 4. dump boiling water into bucket 5. attach special lid (lid with poly filled breather hole) 6 wait 10 minutes, and stir with isoproply wiped peice of rebar 7 re atach lid
7(b) if out of verm use 3/4qts water
In a pinch once, i was short on time and knocked out 20 bricks in under two hours, also with this method if you have the portible stove tops you can do it in your garage, i know this is slightly off topic and i just might build something like this just so i can impulse seal up my coir for later use, good thread.

I'm going to attempt to use this to pasteurize mesh laundry bags filled with straw.. I haven't seen anyone try this yet. I've tried once with no success because I used a pillowcase which didn't allow for moisture penetration once it got wet -- something I overlooked. Also I've found that sealing any vent holes on/underneath the handles with RTV silicon helps to increase temperatures. I was able to get it up to 170 no problem once I did this, and it was about 50 degrees at the time. Anyway I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

steaming straw is a bit tricky, you cant let it get to hot or itll sterilize it and then lead to contams right away, apparently this is the best way to pasturize it..straw pasturizer tec

I'm familiar with that tek, though I've never used it. However I feel that as long as the temperatures are maintained within the proper range and that the bag allows proper penetration of the straw with steam that it could be a good method of pasteurization. Nobody else seems to have tried such a thing yet. My plan is to get 4-5 mesh laundry bags and fill each one with a relatively small amount of straw (already chopped/washed), get the temps up and then plop 'em in for an hour. I think it'd ultimately be much cleaner than using a hot water bath. Also, it'd make spawning quicker and more sterile -- empty a bag, then spawn, another bag, then spawn.

All I can tell ya is I have tried it and can be tricky to keep the temps where you need them, the straw on the bottom gets the hotest stream and that where the problems arise it gets 200 degree steam pumped on it for the whole process it is to hot for straw.,. Look in my sig at the live steam box., I've been using it for a few years now.. whatever you decide good luck.

That does make sense now that you put it like that... what substrate would you recommend?

any thing but straw works fantastic, stellar even.
You could raise the rack away from where the steam comes out and put in a vent, but that takes space away from the whole deal, where as you could do the hot water bath with much more in the same size tub..

Hmm.. perhaps rotating the CPVC inside of the steambox could prevent this issue? Maybe one side facing horizontally forward and the other backward could let the steam be evenly distributed still while allowing it to cool before reaching the straw?
I want to do straw because of $$... However if it's not going to work I don't want to waste my time. Do you put your substrate in small plastic bags at field capacity with a rubber band around the top as in the other tek I saw, or do you have a different method?

yup, field capacity first, then into a regular garbage bag, then when it comes out and cools, I just pour in my spawn into that same bag to mix...
Perhaps if you have more questions you should pm me so we don't clutter up Akira's thread.

Great post! Thank you so much! I was readin that Akira is using a moisture meter to control properly the moisture level of the substrate...cool!But i have a question.. I want to pasteurize poo, can you tell me what the reading on the moisture meter should be for a proper level of moisture of the manure? Thank you again

What’s a pressure generator catpiler? Good to see all this action on a 10 year old post! I was just in Goodwill looking for shit to mod and ran across a Wagner 705 for $9 but couldn’t remember the model number but luckily remembered reading this and was able to find this thread. So glad I bought this model and works great
