Black and Decker Vegetable Steamer Tech!! PF Style
    #8575077 - 06/28/08 05:53 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I have been asked if these type of vegetable steamers would work for sterilizing brf/verm cakes.
I wish mine would hold more cakes

I have always assumed that they would work but I have never taken to  the time nor have I seen a post where someone has used one. I had a little free time today so i put a few cakes together. I used a basic brf/verm cake recipe. Any recipe will work but the only important thing is to use distilled water. you can only use distilled water when making brf/verm cakes. All other types of water will kill the mushroom mycelium. It has to be this brand also.

Here is something a lot of people screw up on. Its the packing of substrate into the jar. I usually fill the jar to the top without packing it. Then I hit the bottom of the jar a few times and it will compress to the correct density and allow room for the verm layer.

I used a typical verm layer with an added layer of tyvek along with the metal lid. Straight tyvek allows too much moisture loss and the cake will dry out and stall.

Fill the steamer with water, it is actually better to use distilled in here but any will work.
I think its hot

Calibrate the thermometer for the test run

Put the jars in and fire it up

Looky here, 212, perfect. The cool thing about the vegetable steamer is that water will not splash up and ruin your cakes.

I wish I would have bought a bigger steamer now.

Why would you need to use distilled water to make these cakes? And why in the world would you need to use a specific BRAND of distilled water???

I thought you were off your nut. So I guess you are not really suggesting people pack their jars down by slamming them down on the table, either... :crazy2:

It does work, it held 212 degrees for over an hour. It works just as good as simmering the cakes in a pot for an hour.

Now for the why would anyone use a pc question??? You still have a lot to learn

i guess our difference in thinking on this is the definition of "works". if this works, and it's certainly easier than boiling in a pot, which i've also heard some say doesn't work very well. then the only advantage to a PC would be size. i mean, if this works and by works i mean kills all contaims then that means it works as good as a pc. if it doesn't kill all, meaning it doesn't work as good as a pc, then that means it doesn't work for this purpose.  personally, i hope it does work, cheaper and easier that's for sure. although slower. got my fingers crossed for ya

okay, i follow you now. The pc gets hotter, shorter cook times, thorough cooking. The pc is always the best bet. This works good in lets say a dorm room and it much safer than using a hot plate.

ok, gotcha. it's encouraging to know. so many of us are not interested in huge grows. and often the same experienced growers that insist that you have to use a PC no matter what and that you should get the biggest one money can buy, because it's so much faster and easier than using a small one, are the same ones that scream about how this is a hobby of patience. and it certainly is.
since this performs the job of 100% sterilization as well as a PC, what's a little extra time when you have to stare at fully colonized jars for a week before birthing them?
if that is the model i think it is, there is a 75 min timer. i assumed you set it for the max?

i set it for the max (75) but I turned it back to 75 after it heated up to 212. AS for the sterilization differences between a pc and boiling brf cakes I would say that boiling/steaming is 99% and pc'ing is 99.999% Pc is always better but I do not remember ever having contams due to lack of sterilization when doing cakes with a regular pot but this is 10 years ago.

This is the one I have its bout 30$ and will only fit 4 jars. its almost big enough to layer them but not quite.

This one is bigger, looks like you might be able to get 2 layers or none

This is the no joke real deal 12 1/2 pints at a time cooker.
Perfect for the dorm room.

Cool thing about these is that there will be no smoke

triples brand? @ walmart
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9222982
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9222966

just a matter of maker sure you can fit 4 in each tray. someone might have to make a trip tomorrow.

this would work with bags, syringes, etc also i'd assume. is there anything that requires pressure? would you want your jar lids a little looser than you would if using a PC?  thanks

So you're saying that you have to have special water and verm for this "steamer tek" to work? That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. You're kidding right?

Tahoe is doing cakes(brf) not grains(wbs, rye, millet).
You need a PC for grains not for BRF cakes. You can do all the jars of BRF you want in a pot of boiling water, but you can't do jars full of grains that way. Not safely anyway. You need pressure and higher temps, more than a pot of boiling water can give, to effectively kill all those endospores in the grains.
You have to, at least, use steam to sterilize BRF , but, you have to use pressure and higher temps and steam to sterilize grains. Although some will disagree and say that "Fractional Steam Sterilization" works also(but, not for me). A steamer will not work for grains, or at least it won't work in Doc's world.

My two pennies

Doc

P.S. Nice Tek Tahoe    :grin::wink:

after starting to question it a little(due to some other more obvious jokes in the thread), i did a little research(and by research i mean i looked for posts here about steamers that RR gave an opinion on) and he seems to agree with doc. RR's quote: "Can it run for two hours without shutting down? If so, use it."

so there we have it   if the timer can't handle 120 mins, just turn it back up before it stops so that it will equal 120 min.

as luck would have it, my g/f has one of these. gave it a test run. filled it with water and put the tray in and closed it up. steams up like hell. however i put a cooking thermometer in there and it reads 210 steady.  not sure how accurate it is, i filled a big insulated cup with as much ice as it would hold then filled with water and let it sit for a couple minutes and it read 35. so i'm guess it's accurate. is 210 close enough?

turns out the 210 was actually from water splashing, now that the splash guard is in, the air temps only go to about 190. if left in there for 90 mins once 190 is hit, is that enough time/heat if you are only doing brf jars? thanks

he's just taking a stab at the massive profit some sponsors are making off of cheap, easily available materials b/c people are simply to lazy to do 20 minutes work.  Instead they spend $40-60/lb for substrate- before shipping, etc.

Exactally my thoughts... nothing here but Mis-information being carried on by someone who thinks they know it all, and that any water is different from any other water... unless its distilled its just water and i have used water from the fish tank before to make PF tek's and it worked just fine....

Mis-information is the key to noob questions just like B+ is a "noob" strain too... Bull Shit.

Apparently you still haven't read the ENTIRE thread or maybe you aren't comprehending something. The water thing was a JOKE. Let me break it down for you since you seem to be missing the key posts.

First:

Quote:

legallyhomeless said:
I think the water thing is a joke? Ive used all types of water. Even water I wouldnt drink due to too much iron, and things.

Tahoe responded with:

Quote:

tahoe said:
because there is so much false info floating around here that I feel that I need to be responsible;e for some of it

Anyone familiar with Tahoe's posts knows he likes to post funny shit like this to throw people for a loop. The way this thread played out is EXACTLY what Tahoe was shooting for.

Whatever. I don't think it's funny, and there's no doubt that people will read the first post and skip a lot of the rest, then post confused newb questions about what brand of water is best and what's the best dingle dangle to fling in their flim flammer.

If the whole thing was a joke, that's be one thing. And the fact that tahoe usually has decent advice just makes it worse.

Man, you guys are a bit uptight about this. It's one sentence in one post that will be buried under the many "How come I don't see myc? It's been like 24 hours." threads. Like Tahoe said, there is plenty of misinformation here anyway. The difference is that Tahoe explained that it was joke. If some noob reads that and begins only using distilled water, then it's his fault for not doing more than 30 seconds of reading.

If someone actually believes that a only a particular brand of water works, or you can only use a pot to steam jars or that you can only do pftek in the dorm; then they deserve the results that they get.

Tahoe good call on pointing out that steam is steam it doesn't really matter where it came from.

all you other bitches, get over it less than 15 words of satire and everybodies panties are in a wad. :calledajoke:

just something that I wanted to add.

when I lived on campus I "steamed" pf jars in several unique locations.

Various steam outlets to the universities mass HVAC system.
An autoclave that was in one of the random unused classrooms.
and a few others that arn't quite as interesting.

The point is be creative
and
if you only read one tek then you don't really deserve results.

that is unless you use Tahoe's(trademark) Brown Rice flour, walmart distilled water and verm from lowes. then you deserve one pound dry off a 1/2 pint cake.

the jumpsuit works better because you dont have to worry about getting back/chest hair in the brf.

this eliminates most causes of overlay.
