this thread is a year old but seems like a great concept. Is anyone using this with success? My biggest concern is that it would get too hot in an hours time. You don't want to exceed 170 degrees for correct pasteurization.

Once you hit the top end of your temp range, turn the steamer off. When the temp falls back down to lower end of your temp range, turn it back on. I'm sure that would maintain temp nicely, being sealed and insulated and all..

do large rubbermaid and sterlite tubs stand up well to boiling temperatures? I got a nice tub I could try with this.

im only guessing but maybe because the temp is high enough to kill bacteria but at the same time the steam keeps the substrate moist... which is good.

yeah- I had this brainstorm about converting a big 40 gallon ice-chest to do the job. That would hold the heat in for hours!

Curious,
Is anyone else using this method? It be sweet to see other projects based off this Tek.
Where is Akira these days?
I just got my 705 Whoo Hoo!

Why? You can accomplish the exact same thing for less money, parts, work, etc.
Step 1: Buy some oven bags Step 2: Use the pre-built pasteurizer located in your kitchen (oven)

That's an excellent idea too
The thing I like about Akira's bulk pasteurizer is it is somewhat mobile.
I would Imagine you could Pasteurize allot in the oven. Probably comparable to the Bulk Pastu Tek if not more.

An oven is bad because it will dry out your substrate.
I just got a Wagner 705 for cheap on e-bay and made this same setup using the same tub. This setup works great!!!

I can fit 4 full bags of substrate in my oven, nowhere near what OP is doing.
I'd say 4 full oven bags is around 8 gallons, give or take. Plenty to do 2 30 gallon monotubs, or 3 18 gallon tubs.
If your oven is electric, line a rack with foil, and put it on the bottom "rung" of your oven. You don't want the corners to droop down and touch the bottom heating element, it'll burn a hole and dry out the substrate.
Lay the bag nearest the front of the oven on it's side, so you can stick a meat or candy thermometer in there and monitor the temperature. Try to get the end of the thermometer as close to the center of the substrate as you can. Don't tie the bags off tight, steam pressure could make the bag pop, and you'll have a shitty oven to clean.
The only problem with this method, is evaporation. Although, I don't see it as a problem, but others might. You will have some evaporation through steam, which dries it out a little. I don't see it as a problem, because my substrates on the dry side colonize quicker.
If you don't want to deal with that "issue", add a little more water, a little bit past field capacity, but not sopping wet.
I pre-heat the oven to 250F, load my bags in there, and give it an hour. It should be at ~100F or so at that point, but climbing. I then drop the temp to ~150F (which is "warm" on the oven dial, and in another half hour the thermometer shows perfect pasteurization temperature and holding, and I start the 60 minute timer.

I addressed that issue above.
Oh, and make sure you fill the bags somewhat evenly.

I payed 20$ for the Wagner and that's it. I already had the tub and tubing, silicone, and racking. So it's not expensive at all.
I also like the portability so I can have it in my spare room, basement, or garage and not in my families kitchen. People really appreciate this.

skip the plastic bags, use burlap bags also available at uline. Your substrate will never ever come out more than field capacity and will be much more evenly heated by the steam.

Makes sense thanks. Different setups for different situ's
That's why I like this community everyone has very innovative ways and lots to offer.
Anyone else had experience with the bulk pasteurizer? What are the temps your getting and what have you done to remedy? i.e not enough heat or too much, I was thinking of a design for a blow off valve or too. I will post when I am done building.

Good point. ...but working the poo in the garage sounds like an enhancement to me. People have often posted about how less-than-disgusting poo smells when heated, but I still wonder if a garage option is an advantage.
I will keep my eyes open for a cheap steamer. I am going to need to pasteurize some media soon, but not that much at this stage.
One thing that I am not entirely clear on is where and how many steam escape holes this design has. I believe (?) that these tools push out a fair stream of steam. This is not compressible and will need to come out of the tub somewhere, or there will be no flow through the tub. How large is the thermometer hole? Is this the port that I am thinking of?
Take care,
JD

I made one of these, however, I used fuel line hose and hooked it up to my pc. I find that I have to use blankets to get it up to 175 and then remove them a little when it gets to hot. Works fantastic, I like that yours is portable though.
