Concentration, the bane of my existence.
    #5201743 -

I have a difficult time keeping my mind focused on specific tasks, and drift from one thought to another very quickly. In a creative sense, its wonderful, and allows me to go through ideas and come up with great and original solutions to the challenges I'm presented, but when it comes time to implementing them, and hunkering down to do the details and the "get er done" side of things.. I tend to sidetrack very easily. I'm not lazy, and I do work very hard.. but I have a hard time keeping that energy focused on one task. I'm not sure if I naturally just get bored with what I'm doing, or thinking.. but as I get older I'm noticing it more and more in everything I do.

My conversations. - I never maintain a topic for long.
My tasks, and jobs. - I get bored quickly with jobs, even stimulating ones. I get bored with the situation and wonder about a different sort of work, I daydream. If I'm programming, I think about drawing, and if I'm drawing, I think about becoming a nomad, and traveling the country with a stick and a knapsack.. or of being a fisherman in Thailand, wrestling the sea for my livelihood. So on, and so on... my thoughts drift.
My art - I end up with a lot of unfinished pieces. A new idea is fresh and revitalizing.. until the next one comes along, and it steals my interest away... Smaller drawings tend to get finished more often.

About 2 years ago, I went to a doctor, as I lost it one day. The idea of going to work, dealing with everyone, just freaked me out - I couldn't do it. Something somewhat unusual, as I'm a pretty outgoing and extroverted kinda guy. I called in sick, and I went to the clinic instead. With the doctor, I talked for a very long while, and he said that it seemed as if I was suffering from depression caused by an inability to focus, and suggested a prescription of Effexor to aide in my concentration. I more or less concluded this to all be hocus pocus corporate pill pushing, as I didn't feel depressed at all.. I was a little stressed out, but not depressed. I tend to feel baseline.. not really happy, but not sad, either. Reflecting back, though.. seeing these last two years through the doctor's perspective, maybe he was right.. and I'm wondering if I should have filled that prescription and given it a try. (No need to inform me of Effexor's bad rep, I'm well informed and aware of the horror stories.)

I'm not looking for anything specific here really, just spilling some words into a little journal that gives feedback. (Though stories that relate to this, and possible tips for fixing concentration issues wouldn't be arriving uninvited.)

Um.. concentrating for anybody is hard. If you can tell yourself 'Do this' and remember that you want to get it done, you can do it no matter how many obstacles are in your way. It may be unfilfilling when you have no drive to do something, so you get sad or angry. That's when you can either give up, hunker down and do it, or put a smile on your face and say 'fuck myself, I'm going to do this and have a good time'.

Working out + relaxing (something that's truely relaxing where you focus + are calm) help me. Meditation is a sure fire winner as well. For some reason I hate the idea of it, though.

Yea, I suppose so. It just seems like other people stick to their thought trains like they're on rails, (I made that one up just now for ya. ) while I find it immensely difficultly... I should say impossibility, in doing so.

They're probably all on Ritalin. :smirk:

Working out is definitely an excellent way to center yourself.. and, I hear you on the meditation.. it can be pretty frightening. Facing nothing but yourself, and your thoughts. I think you're right about it being surefire, though. I  need to be more aware of my thoughts, and where they are going.. so that I can maintain the direction they take.

i think its time to explore your fantasies. (im in the middle part of travelling around with nothing but a napsack and stick) - couldnt work for the man if i tried (ended 6 jobs in 05 by not showing up.) - im discovering and becomming. It sounds like you might be too.

However, exercise is great, ive been trying to be physically active and mentally aware through and though in my life - the discipline proves gratifying.

See, your living proof that a multitalented, outgoing person can feel discontent and disillusion. Everyone wants what they don't have, and reading your posts, you have quite a lot more than most in terms of talent, but still you want more as is human nature.

As for the concentration issues I'd try SJW before Effexor, it has mild psychostimulatory effects because it inhibits the reuptake of dopamine, and in fact it's claimed to have caused psychotic episodes in people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder to illustrate that.

Try it, you might find that it's just what you need to rejuvenate your interest in life.

some other accessible options are adrafinil and modafinil, which don't require a prescription. You won't know until you try them whether they work for you and your concentration, they may just prevent you from sleeping, while being useless for focus.

Exercise helps too though, there aren't many sedentary people who are also happy. Spend 20min on the exercise bike or similar most days of the week for a few weeks and your should notice atleast a 10% improvement in well-being. We all get told from a young age that exercise improves well-being but for one reason or another most of us forget to acknowledge it's impact, and when we find life's taking us for a ride, and self-esteem and mood are low that lack of exercise isn't an exacerbating factor.

Obvious my dear fellow. You were being driven to distraction by living some one elses life. (The cultures). Your soul was rebelling and as you weren't listening you had a meltdown.

Common problem to sensitive people.

You are me. Da Vinci had the same problem with his artwork, too; he could never finish any of his works...

Hmm, I have the exact same fucking problem too, cool. I actually bought some St. John's Wort awhile back, still haven't tried it, because every time I do I remind myself that it might interact with any tripping I want to do in the future.
