Stopping Effexor
    #5882008 - 07/20/06 05:04 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

So I've been taking effexor for a month and I might stop at my own discretion. I don't think it's making too much of a difference and I believe I was getting over my depression when I started taking them anyways.

How long is long enough to say "I've tried effexor and it wasn't worth it"?...cause the doctor says i should wait even longer than this one month to judge it's effects...

One month is kinda a short period of time, but do what you think is best.

My personal experience with taking that stuff was bad.. it gave me these crazy long vivid dreams.. I would wake up in the morning in cold sweats shaking.

I was on it longer than a month and it never really did anything positive for me.

it takes 2-6 weeks before effects are noticed. If you decide to stop taking it make sure you ease yourself off it or some unwanted side effects may come along.

I say quit while you're ahead If you feel like you can get by without it. I've been through lexapro withdrawal and it sucked, to say the very least. I've heard effexor is worse due to it working on multiple receptors. I would say taper yourself off of it over another month period, fast at first, then more gradually. My experience with lexapro was the last 2.5mg/day (I was on 20) were the hardest, and getting from 2.5mg to 0 took longer than 20mg to 2.5mg. I still had withdrawals for several weeks after. But remember, I'm not a doctor, so please scrutinize my advice before proceeding, especially since it's based on my personal experience with a similar but different drug.

i was on it for a long long time, whatever you do dont stop cold turkey, you will have HORRIBLE withdrawls.....

talk to your doctor and they will give you some smaller pills that will step you down slowly. how many milligrams are you on?

i went through this.

my opinion is if you're gonna use drugs, use the real ones.
no not cocaine, heroin etc....
white man medicine makes you feel good first, bad later.
native medicine makes you feel bad first, good later.

no this doesn't mean go out and trip balls either... but it does mean that I think depression is a FAULT of DAILY LIVING and therefore DAILY MEDICATION compounds the problem.

i think (and of course research suggests) psychedelics can in some instances with the absolutely right environment fix these sorts of issues and give one the proper vigor for life. [though they aren't for everyone, and me.... i think i might go nutty if i took anymore.... i'm getting tons of higher vibrations and energies just being sober for 3 months]

but really, depression is a symptom of the western world, why interact with the western world by taking it's medicine.....

meditation. exercise. religion. entheogens (optional, be careful as they can destroy too!), etc..... deep introspection. hypnosis.

so if you're gonna take an anti-depressant..... you have the option of pills the rest of your life, or entheogen use. and Albert Hoffman reccomended a meager 10ug dose of LSD as a proper and beneficial anti-depressant that actually yields results.

I would imagine that if you once in a while ate 1 HBWR seed when you felt down, it would do similar.

But the sober life is good too.

what in the world is depressing you? Being alive in this society? Well.... you can only free yourself...... this planet is actually beautiful and full of happiness, it's just that we aren't taught to pay attention to it, and are encouraged to think things are hopeless.

so man.

quitting effexor... I did. I have a long story I could write about it. They upped my dosage about every 2 weeks, and it was tripled to the max allowable dose within the timespan of a month... because they'd say "are you feeling better?" and I'd say "no not really" and this is becasue they were trying to combat my chemicals, not the fact that I had a huge REAL problem staring me down destroying me.....

and so they'd up it.

"you feeling better?" .... "kind of but not really." so they'd up it.

i noticed a blue aura around reality at this point.

well. My depressoin was the fault of wrong views and strong craving. I displaced my happiness into the conditional acceptance of another and therefore sabotaged my happiness, and refused to be happy unless this fantasy condition was met..... and so.... i was sad, imagine that eh?

I quit. I went through hellish withdrawls.

So what I will say is if you quit, straight up tell your doctor, "I'm quitting, no more of your drugs..... I need your help doing it though" because you don't want to do it on your own.

what I did was every week I'd go down a dosage (since I had tons of bottles full of the different doses available since they kept upping my doses so much) and man

it was insane. you'd think i was quitting heroin or something.

it didn't really make me "happy" to quit but it did make me substantially freer.

happiness comes from within. the brain makes its own drugs, even psychedelic ones.

--------------------------

now please just whatever you do, do it rationally. psychedelics destroy minds too... I don't know what to say about anything, all I know is there is freedom, and that they can be used for healing given all research...... and maybe you can be super happy in this society... there are some great places in this nation, in this planet, in the civilized world, full of vibrant, alive, spiritual people..... there are great occupations that can be rewarding

it's the social auto-pilot that you have to look out for, because the auto-pilot just wants you to be a drone. but if you break free from that, you can be at complete peace in the middle of las vegas, finding gambling discolorful behavior..... and not particularly liking being around drunk people. and you can fall in love with the police.
it's just about breaking your current perceptions of what is and isn't happy, beautiful, joyous, free.

and using the right tools. I would pray fervently about it, aloud, utnil you are praying with emotion, letting yourself cry and just speaking all your issues aloud to yourself, asking guidance. then i would trust anything you think about or encounter that gives you sensations, however fleeting, of peace, love happiness, or hope.

i would trust your dreams. i would go see if there are classes on tai chi, yoga, meditation (be it from a monastery, or in a secular way), chi kung, any sort of mind/body application. they are prevalent right now and it's a wonderful thing.

you may encounter a great teacher that can really help you if you seek out some of these traditional mind/body exercises.

and i would just keep up hope.

because dude if you truely want to be free, and happy... you will be. it might be a really hard process, but you will be. you cannot stop it, once you set the will into motion.

and honestly, in an ideal world that would mean quitting the pills. you don't HAVE to though! but those things are worthless..... if you are going to combat depression chemically i think it should be done with MDMA or mescaline....

otherwise i think you need THERAPY...... or someone to talk to. and you need to root out the REAL problem. we have control over our brains chemicals! that's the ultimate truth. some people may have dysfunctional wiring and need medicine.... understandable.
most don't.

it's up to you. it's your life. demand happiness and wait eagerly for it to come into fruition.

what do you need? What do you want? Where does what you need and want overlap sensibly? if you had magic powers, what would you do, what and who would you manifest, in order to bring you exactly where you are now, into where you want to be?

dream!
