I have an idea. (This applies only to the mushroom cultivation forum)

How about this... whenever someone who has less than 10-20 posts goes to post a question in the Mushroom Cultivation forum, a screen pops up reminding them to try using the search option first and explains to them how to use it.

The reason I bring this up is cause I am tired of answering the same questions over and over and over again for novice growers.

Now, I know i do not have to respond to posts and just ignore all the newbies, but then again that wouldn't be a great community now would it?  So rather than ignoring and flaming them for being lazy maybe we should force feed them the search option.

It would save board space and leave the forum open to questions that remian unclear after reading other previous posts.

If you like this idea please post a response so that the administrators here at the Shroomery take notice.

It would also be nice to set up a section for a Grow FAQ.  I would be willing to help write one if Thor or 3DShroom agree.

Peace out, and post responses if you agree people!

One could make some kind of a search game to find out a code that is then needed for registration.
This code would be somewhere in the text of the FAQ and obtainable only if one trully reads the FAQ.

Out of 33  views only one response.

Thanks for the support Anno, and I like your idea also.

Like I said, if you think the post above is a good idea, post a response so the administrators know it has support.

Peace to you all.

Why not just have a link above the main cultivation page that resembles the "chemical supplier policy" link at the top of the other drugs section. Not that this would completely eliminate the problem, but it would at least remind people to search before they post.

Im sure everyone of us has posted a topic that they have later found in search - i think people tend to find that the search takes to long

The search tool could perhaps use a little work, or at least a mini-FAQ. Does it support booleans? More results would be found if it defaulted to articles+replies and something more full-scope than "the last 2 weeks" to search through, as well. Does the forum search tool search the rest of the website? Does the main website search tool search the forums? It's got to be a little more useful if you want people to use it before posting.

I agree the search tool isn't the "best". If we could adopt a search tool such as the advanced search option they have at Overgrow we would be good.

However, I have never had any trouble finding anything using the current search feature. Just select the right options and you're pretty much set. Of course you need to have the right search parameters, which I think is mainly the problem for many of you. Think about your search parameters before you use em and you'll get much better results.

Peace

Oh, it works for me, perfectly well. But I've figured out how to use it. In a thread about newbies, however (in a suggestions forum), I may as well throw out ideas to make it more useful for those newbies.

The only trouble I have is when nobody has yet posted about what I'm searching for. ;)

I think the Mushroom Cultivation fourm itself needs a FAQ. This is something I have wanted/planned to do for a long time but never had the time or energy to do so. If we could all brainstorn some ideas I doubt it would take long.

I decided to put the project in the works:

http://shroomerystats.tripod.com/cultivationFAQ.txt

This is minimal work. I've just started to work on a slight introduction and a few questions off the top of my head. I'll defently work more on this when I have time. Tips/suggestions would really help and credit will be given.

edit:

That didnt wordwrap like it does on my screen. Any idea on how to fix that. That is, ovbiously, only V0.1 and it will probably be ported to html later.

I'm sure you've already noticed but it seems there implemented some of the ideas here.  Glad to see the community is being listened to.

As for the FAQ, Thor has asked in his thread in Mush. Cultivation for those willing to volunteer for a FAQ.  So far only Anno has volunteered as far as I can see.

So, if you want to help with that FAQ post a reply in that thread Phrozendata.  The more the merrier!

Peace
