Songs and Society

In days of old, people would gather around the campfire and sing tales of courageous voyages and battles or great hunts.

Today we sing about stomach antacids and car insurance (jingles), neurotic co-depedence and self-indulgence.

What will this say to future historians? What does it say about us?

It hasn't looked good for quite a long time. In fact I hold out little hope for this culture. Personally when it's gone I will not grieve.

Mostly because I will be gone with it. :grin:

There is a song by King Crimson from The Court of the Crimson King, called Epitaph. I first listened to it in about 1970 and it still rings completely true. In fact more so than ever.

Well, dark and depressing is how the world looks to me. I cannot deny what is in front of my eyes.

I live now for the experience of living. I realized it awhile ago. It's not about me. That projection of permanance as seen thorough the ego vision. I'm here to manifest the Tao. I get to feel and think anyway I want but it doesn't seem to mean other than more experience for whatever is going on. I have thought deeply on this and I would have to say that nothing matters. If you can find a way to have fun and be relaxed then I suggest doing it.

Although the LP is slow and mysterious this particular piece is not and is still one of the best played and hardest, loudest, and badest songs in rock and roll history.

Really Swami, for some of us there is a deep and profound musical heritage.

To me it says a few things. First, older societies were based more on personal qualities. Great hunts and voyages were of great importance because much of their survival depended on those things. Nowadays, at least in the upper classes of our culture, whether or not you'll get food isn't really a question. Science has answered a lot of our questions about the world we live in, so people have lost a lot of wonder and curiosity of the world.

Thus we have become more concerned with trivialities such as playing the "I'm better than you game" and self-indulgance, as you say.

To future historians, it will look as if some of our society was concerned with themselves while others were struggling for survival.

None of these things are inherently bad. Likewise, they aren't alright. Instead of being isolated little groups of people scattered across the world, now we're a global community. Many people are just slow to realize this and so spend their time pleasing themselves instead of trying to provide basic necesseties that many of our brothers and sisters lack.

I think greed and a lack of a realistic philosophy about life also play into it somewhat.
