How long on pressure cooking?
    #4956432 -

Im a new guy to the shroomery, which is one hell of a cool site. And I am trying to learn some more about PC. I have done some research on the sight and have found some good info. But here is my question for you if you would like to answer. Is there a appropriate amount of time that you need to PC. I have found that allot of you like to PC for about 45 minutes to an hour. Now there are those who like to PC for more than 2 hours. How should I go about a time ratio? Any info on that and any useful info for a beginner grower would be very helpful

All depends on the tek you do, if you do PF tek, or WBS (Wild bird seed) you need about  60-90minutes of PC, 90 is most reccommended.

But the best thing to do is read, read, read, and read a little more.

Good luck Asc!

the vinegar poured in the water in the pressure cooker is meant to keep your jars nice and clean looking. if you don't and you have high mineral content in your water, you will end up with a whitish residue stain that is kind of annoying to remove and makes your jars look like shit. the vinegar just prevents any minerals depositing on the jar, probably because its a weak acid and it reacts with the minerals somehow, but i don't actually kno the chemistry of it so...

but umm, well see if u pressure cook your jars for too little an ammount of time being anything less than an hour, it might not get sterilized. but if you go too long probably for most grain teks, well at least for the bird seed teks ive used and the pf tek, if you sterilze too long the grain will eather dry out too much, or it will do some sort of crazy melting of the substrate...idk how to explain it beyond that lol, but its nothing the mycelium will probabyl ever be able to travel through because it just kind of solidifies... idk tho the most likely thing from cooking too long is dryign the grain out too much. idk lol if this makes any sense at all thats doing good considering i was working all day today and i didnt go to sleep last night and i can tell ill probably be up way to late tonight too. oh well

I would figure cooking for about 2 hours would probably dry the rye up into a crusty form. would a hour be good enough using that tek?

i'd say an hour is good maybe an hour 15 minutes or an hour and a half. the determining factor in how much more than 1 hour you cook for is based on yur water content. if it is slightly wetter SLIGHTLY then it would definately benefit from an extra 15-30 minutes. but ifff it's too wet u might as well re do the jars cuz when u cook the jars and if the grain is too wet it will kind of melt together into this blob of shitthat the myc ca't travel though.

ive seen that shit before and dont want that in my jars. what would you use, rye or birdseed. I would think the rye works a little easier cause it has a stronger casing I would say. Like I said, im a new guy

well, i honestly can't speak about rye cuz 've never used it, the most i know about it pretty much comes from magash's syringe to print tek in the archives.

all i kno is birdseed is susceptible (spelling??) to that melting togetherness that is bad news, but if you follow the birdseed preperation teks to a "T" you shouldn't have any problems with it. i don't know anything really about rye sooo... lol yea. all i kno is ive been doing birdseed for a while now, i've failed a shitload but it is no flaw in the birdseed and it was entirely my impaience and sloppiness resulting in fucked up water content and contamination and such things.... but i have had soem decent success with birdseed.

eh i wrote that above stuff like at least an hour ago. now i'll have u know that i haven't slept for about 36 hours, so if that stuff up there doesn't make sense, please pardon me lol. i barely remember anything about writing it

I think pretty much all grains call for 90 mins at 15 PSI.

yes 90 minutes with the right water content is definately the best i guess i didn't exactly clearly state that. but if your water content is a little low you'll end up with a jar full of grains that are too dry os too close to too dry, and if you have too much water it will be a grain glop solid mess and hard to clean out too! but if its just right then it won't end up too dry and it won't end up glop gloopy solid shit.

well, im not sure if this method will work for rye, but the 30 min simmer and strain method hasnt failed me yet with my WBS jars

I hate water content!!!!

I seem to never be able to get it right! I have contamned way too many jars lately. I believe it's the kind and brand of birdseed I used. I have seen the big goopy mass of clumping that you talk about many of times. I have seen a whole collection of molds and I'm gettin pretty good at finding out what causes most types.

  "A WALL OF CONTAMINATION"

NASTY!!

THOSE SMELL NASTY!!!

GOT MY GIRL TO WASH EM, IF I GOT ALL THE CRAP OUT. ISN'T SHE GREAT!

(The birdseed I used has some kind of powdery coating on it. it said nothing about Bird-Kote, so I thought it would be ok. I was wrong! i tried to go in bulk and get a 50lb. bag.    BAD IDEA!  :mad2:)

I just pressure cooked standard pf tek BRF cakes for a FULL 90 min, at 15 psi I put about 65cc of water in them and they seem to look a little dry compared to the ones I've done previously in a regular pot, Am I in the clear or did just bake my cakes instead of sterilizing them?

if i were there to see how dry they might be, i'd be able to make a semi educated guess as to whether they r too dry or not. but when in doubt, throw it out. not the jars of course. i thinkif u mix 240 ml of verm with 120 ml water and 120 ml BRF you have a enough for two half pint jars. even if the measurement numbers arent exactly correct, the ratio is wut ure looking for. 2:1:1 of verm : water : brf. it may also have been the fact that you pc'ed the jars for 90 minutes. if ppl get away with boiling the jars for 1 hour and have good water content i think pc'ing pf jars for 60 minutes at 15 psi would be good. if u had the right ratios for your substrate mix, it must've been the pc time. grains definately do need 90 minutes, 2 hours or more would certainly be better but u'd have to know wut ure doing with your water content. remember nothing will live in that extreme heat just as much as nothing will live at room temp with no water, and that heat drives out the water sooo....
