Memorial Planned For Victims Of Communism

COSTS OF COMMUNISM

At the embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C., a fund-raiser was held for the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.

Congress authorized the foundation to design and construct a memorial to the more than 100 million victims of communism. The National Capital Memorial Commission approved a site for it at Maryland and Constitution avenues, N.E., just behind the Supreme Court and a block from the Capitol. The memorial will include a 10-foot "Goddess of Democracy," a replica of the statue raised by pro-democracy Chinese students in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989, and quotations from figures such as Lech Walesa, Andrei Sakharov, Harry Truman, and Ronald Reagan.

Among the many present was John Hanes, one of the few scholars who was given total access to KGB archives after the fall of the Soviet Union.

perhaps this should have been called victims of totalitarianism, as communism is actually supposed to be a radical democracy. The USSR was not communist, and neither is China. They were/are fascist socialists like the nazis. communism means worker/people control and not the state.

do you have any examples of countries starting this new and improved communism? Venezuela?

If a snap of the finger could change the world to a true Communist 'utopia,' the results would, in short time, be more disastrous than the totalitarianism of Mao and Stalin by quite a few orders of magnitude. True Socialism/Communism on such a scale would mean the end of civilization and the destruction of the immense majority of human life. Ludwig von Mises showed this to be true in his Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth.

I think you have to separate communism from Marx's plan to get there. Communism was supposed to be final goal, while the transition is known as socialism. I'm actually much more sympathetic to communism than I am to socialism.

Lenin wasnt as bad as stalin by far. im pretty sure lenin said that the revolution had failed, and trotsky called stalin out on being a totalitarian rather than a communist.

I dont know what the whole "marxism for dummies" thing is about, unless you're trying to say i dont know what im talking about and only read some book like that. It would be impossible to list all of the Marx and Engels, and descendants thereof (up to now), that ive read if that would mean anything to you anyways.

They prob knew what real marxism/communism is, just didnt follow through and went totalitarian instead.

if youd like some good Marx/Marxism stuff, i could point you in the right direction. I like post-marxists a bit more, however, but i guess id include them in any list.

"Communist government" is an oxymoron, as communism is supposed to be the state of human affairs that occurs after the whithering away of the state. As far as socialist government with a Marxist ideology, I'd say Venezuela right now is probably closest, but I wouldn't call that a stunning success.

I don't need a fucking source. Most of the world is dominated by Crapitalism, have a think about how many people are dying in the world because of the unequal distribution of wealth, wars etc etc and yah....you should get the picture. Capitalism has a hell of a lot to answer for.
