Ground up libertarian movements
    #4895261 -

What do you people think about libertarians strong movement at the local level? I think its a good way to seed the ideas. Local elections vote for people first, party second. So its a good way to implement their sound policies at a level where results can be directly seen by people. I would wager that a mayor or such as a libertarian could create an economically powerful community with lots of tax-free incentives for buisness.

Maybe we should all run for our local libertarian office. But don't forget to vote republican in the state and federal elections because as much as libertarians are cool... their foreign policy sucks balls.

Ain't gonna happen. I've given up. Talking to most people about politics is like talking to brick walls.

I encounter several types of people in my daily life:

1. People who are apathetic and who don't care.

2. Rabid Leftists who robotically spout "class warfare" bullshit.

3. Close-minded Rightists who don't have a fucking brain cell in their heads.

4. People who bitch about how things are but who have no clue on what is actually wrong or how to fix things.

The only option for me is to vote my conscience, keep my head down, and do my thing.

I think it is acceptable for people to circumvent the law if it is infringing on their freedom. That's why I encourage people to earn "under the table" money. The government takes too much of our money and their "Ponzi scheme" pension plan (Social Security) is going to be in the shitter in 40 years. The more of your money you hang on to the better (even if it means hiding some of it from the government).

Libertarianism is not in any way inconsistent with a strong, vicious or proactive foreign policy. It is in essence a strictly domestic philosophy

Suppose that depends on how loosely you define an initiation of force. A fundamental crux of the libertarian non-agression axiom is that it's applied universally. It's important to point out when arguing for libertarianism that what is immoral for a person to do is at least as immoral for the state to do -- stealing is wrong so taxation is wrong. Given that, it makes no sense to me and the vast majority of self-described libertarians to not apply libertarianism to foreign policy.

I do not consider libertarianism to be a moral code. I consider it to be a philosophy of government. I think a libertarian would by definition separate the two

How do you define libertarianism?

I look foward to the day when elections in western governments are betwen a Libertarian party with a strong foreign policy, and a Libertarian party with a more apologetic one.

I consider myself a libertarian. When I define myself to people I say that I am a small government conservative libertarian. Sounds pretty convoluted.

I don't know how to define my libertarianism.

Let's take the topic of this post. Someone suggests that the party should grow up from the local level. That is fine and nice, but as I see it a conflict exists. I am a small government conservative. But part of my philosophy is that the "small government" part is the federal part of government. I think that government should mainly be conducted on a local level. Local governments should be as big as they need to be as defined by the community, and the federal government should be small.

To follow that point through, I am probably more supportive of big local governments and no federal interference. Many people call this "States rights". All I wish of our federal government is a few things that are mandated by the constitution. National defense and infrastructure are main ingredients to that.

When it comes to local politics, I am somewhat of a socialist. Not for welfare, be it corporate or for the poor, but I do think that local spending can enhance the common good. My town has a top flight network of libraries and parks. Our zoo is publicly funded, and by some estimates it is world class. I like my local government spending money on libraries, zoos, and parks. I am proud of these achievements and I use them. The people of my community vote to spend that money on these goods, and they should have that right. Our police, fire department, and our schools are locally funded. We need to fund these projects well, and oversee them so that we get a return on our investment. If supporting these things makes me a socialist, so be it. I do believe that government has a part to play.

My libertarianism is defined by a faith in free people. I think that people should be free. The should be free to choose schools outside of a mandated government monopoly. I think that they should be free to choose whatever substance they want to enjoy without regard to any federal guideline. I think we need to abolish the IRS and let people be as productive as they want without penalty.

I want to see a mix of policies in different states because I want to see what succeeds and what fails. The inner city of America is in decline, and this is happening all over the nation. This could only happen when you have coordinated efforts from federal government policies. We have a system of public housing in our cities that destroys the urban core. We have a system of government education or indoctrination that gives the middle class an incentive to move out of cities to the suburbs to escape the onslaught. We have a war on drugs that we can't win, and most of the victims are in our cities.

Time and time again, our government policies have failed us. We concentrate poverty, violence, and criminal activity by government policy. We lock up a quarter of our young black male population, and we have encouraged childbirth out of wedlock.

I wish I had a good closer, but I am drunk and sick of typing.

And why not? Libertarianism suggests that the government be as small as possible to interfere in as few rights as possible. The Constitution is built around these principles.

The Federal government should regulate commerce among the country, to standardize measurements and transportation, and provide defense against foreign parties.

Now, obviously, this is going to require money, so some taxation is necessary.

On a more local level, the State should provide a similiar function for the local municipalities, where the people can decide exactly what they want their government to do, within the sphere that it should not allow a majority to remove the innate rights of any minority (or individual).

Again, each of these portions will have to tax, but instead of a Federal heavy spending -- as we now have -- the heaviest spending would be at the local level, whereas, on the whole, the federal government will spend less than the sum of the municipalities since it is only funding for an army with the ability to defend (not attack or invade), and helping provide for national transportation and setting the standards. The transportation would be helped further by the states for areas which they deem important, and even more on the local level by munincipalities that have even more interest in these roads. This would make interstate highways larger in more populated areas, and smaller in less populated areas, yet still providing transportation means between vast streches of area.

Instead, our Federal government taxes inane amounts of money from the citizens, manages and regulates everything that they can distort the "Commerce clause" to include, and, to top it all off, enforces a particular set of moral and health values upon the non-majority of citizens that would like to enjoy certain sexual activities, engage in recreational drug use, or risk their lives by driving without a seatbelt on -- all activities that have no harm to the rest of society.

Tell me that the government has the right to prosecute me if I'm growing a marijuana plant in my bedroom, and smoking marijuana in my room, at my own leisure, with no one else around, and not driving under these influences.

Tell me that the Federal government has the right to prosecute me for engaging in marijuana use in a munincipal city that has legalized marijuana. They shouldn't, local laws should outweigh federal laws so long as measurement standards and transportation requirements are met at the federal minimum - standards designed simply to ensure minimum or proper requirements for things such as roads, rail, and measurements (weight, mass, length). Nothing that includes the regulation of a person's at-home actions.

Ugh, another rant, sorry.
